2000 ford mustang gt.....I'm getting an rs in the next month or so and i was wondering how much money id have to put into the car before i can outperform my cousin's mustang....he swears lightning couldnt touch his car when all it has is flowmasters, i'd like to shut him up already....the mods i plan to do first are headers, exhaust, then intake....and probably suspension after that.....just looking for some info....and please dont flame me for the noob question.....thanks

They're both right.

Your comparing two totally different cars. The RSis built for rally or auto-x... and of course an excellent daily driver with AWD for the elements. The Mustang on the other hand has much more power in a straight line. Your car could take or hang with his in most places EXCEPT a straight line.

Thats a tall order man, your talking a little 2.5 liter four banger against, if I recall a 4.6 v8. A guy I work with has a 4.6 mustang with some decent mods and I wouldn't touch it, and my cars got Borla headers, Stromung hfc, stromung single tip cat back, Cobb cai, light weight crank pulley, Sunauto grounding kit, and a bunch of other things. Just remember one simple rule there is no replacement for displacement, I found that out the hard way myself.

fixed:)

As others have stated, against a GT, we get our butts handed to us unless we turbo... :(
With some wild cams along with all the bolt-on mods, you might could keep up, but I still doubt you'd beat it.

Playing with little v6 mustangs can be fun though. :p

If the Mustang your friend has is a 4.6 v8, then no you really have no chance in beating him. Mustangs like all other American muscle cars with their big displacement make most of their power and torque down low. Japanese motors with their small displacement make all their power at high rpms. By the time you hit the rpm range where your motor starts really making it's power, to much time has been waisted and he's gone. Now an STI swapped GC stands a chance in beating him. A GC is lighter than the STI the motor came out of, so you will be faster than an STI. I remember reading in Road And Track the 0 to 60 times for a 2007 Mustang and a 2007 STI, it was a second difference and I think with the STI coming out on top. When it comes to a second its all up to the skill of the driver. But an STI swapped GC has allot more room for error, thats to say that the Mustang you are racing is still stock or lightly modified.

i smirk at gt's hehehehe. if you are n/a with full bolt ons and a reflash and some weight reduction, you'd have him off the line, but thats about it.

i posted on nasioc and after many a post, i've been told to consider an L with a wrx swap....and if i shop around the swap could be had for 4-5k (that doesnt include the price of purchasing the actual car of course)...now does that sound feasible to you guys? any insight to that would be great

L + wrx swap = :) There is no replacement for displacement, haha, I get so tired of hearing that bs. Tell the trp racing team that. Old musclecar talk. You can't compare a turbo'ed car to a n/a, two totally different animals. Sure he can bolt a turbo kit on, but not as likely. Turbo swap your car and swap in a strong transmission as well and you'll be happy.

Labor will vary a lot. If you have friends willing to help and a lot of time to spare, you can do it on the cheap. You can find a lot of help here and on nasioc since there are many who've done it successfully. I bought my swap engine and wiring here for cheap, but I'll need a transmission when my L one goes out, and strong transmissions aren't cheap. You can find ej20g engine/transmission swaps from $1250 to $2k if you check around. The newer engine swaps with a little more hp usually are a lot higher. Luckily an L isn't too heavy so even the older jdm swaps make them quick.

I'm talking about the engine, transmission and ecu. The labor is totally subjective. Unless you know some genius mechanical/electrical guy you can trust you will be paying big for some other shop to do it. There are a few places on the west and east coast that do it. ECS is one of them.

Here is something on the expensive end, for example. But you do get a strong transmission and it will be crazy fast.

I didn't find any of the older ej20g sets but keep looking. Several people here and on nasioc have installed them. I would have gone ej20g but a buddy was selling a crazy ej20k setup and I had to be a guinea pig. Search "ej20k" to see why you'll want to stay away from them, lol.

even then an ej20k is still a good engine. you just need to know how to drive the car. no over revving, make sure the car is tuned, and always make sure your octane is high.

the more searching i do the more expensive this project seems....i'm probably the greenest shade mechanic there is...(changed a radiator hose and brakes, thats about it) so i'd have to pay for a crapload of labor....

Car and Driver tested the 96 mustang gt and got a 0-60 of 6.6 seconds and a 1/4 mile time of 15.1. That was out of a motor rated at 215 horsepower. With full NA mods and good driver skills you may give him a run for his money. But by no means will you ever smoke his ass without boost

to the OP:

I have to question your motivation for taking on a project of this type. Do you want to have a fun car to drive or are you specifically looking for an AWD platform that slays Mustang GTs??

Bottomline, if you are like me and aren't as mechanically inclined as some of the people that post here with insane engine builds that consist of so many swapped parts and deleted pieces that the only thing thats original equipment is the doors and glass on the car then this will cost you quite a bit.

Your friend's car will beat you in a dragrace unless you invest approx. 8k in the ordeal (motor, ecu, tranny, turbo, all manner of bolt-ons, suspension, tuning, and labor). Not including the original cost of the vehicle that you'll be buying as the platform or any kind of aesthetics. It would be a bad ass ride though.

If you were going for broke... Perrin modded a WRX with a 3.0 H6 with twin turbos. That'll spank anything the Mustang can bring to the table. That'll be brutal, neck snapping torque and the HP that puts you in the back of your seat esp. when the boost kicks in.

I'm a realist though without a bottomless wallet. Like everyone else said, mod the car a bit , and let your friend beat you in the dragrace... and you beat him in everything else. OR always drag race in the wet... let the AWD sort it out, his RWD Mustang will be slipping and sliding all over.

pfff 8k?? what are u smoking?

~3500$ invested into my car and i spank stage 2 wrxs and mustang gts all day

can you show me wehre you can get a jdm sti engine and tranny for $2500?
how about $500 frieght?
or wait, how about the harness merging? ($1500)
on top of that, $1500-2000 in install labor.
$3500 my ass.

And harness merging is $1000 from what Ive seen from ECS and GT you could prob get it for cheaper but you cant go wrong with those. Actual physical swap isnt that bad so you could do it youself or pay someone I dont think just putting the engine in would be $1500-2000. Then again maybe it is but I wouldnt pay that for the physical part you can just rent a engine hoist and do it over a weekend.

And $2,500 + $1,500 = $4000. Math FTW!
