legacy ss's are pretty rare in these parts. Do you know if theres any other alternative parts, ie master and slave, I can use? wouldnt all the GD wrx stuff work besides the pedal assembly? Aslo, I would rather use a performance brand wrx clutch and pp if possible. that way I know what the torque ratings are. would that be possible? forgive me, I dont know much about the old legacys.

You can use all early GD wrx stuff. even the pedals. GD pedals require a little modding to get them in, GC will be bolt in. WRX slave & Line, clutch, PP, WRX or RS Master. You will also need the shifter components if the trans doesnt come with them as well as the 5 speed trans brace & mount.

You'll need a 5 speed driveshaft, You might need the Phase I starter. The bolt pattern is different between phase II motors and Phase I trans. It works, just less bolts in the Phase I.

My 1999 jdm sti trans (V5/6 were the same, as long as it wasn't a RA) came with a starter, clutch/flywheel, and slave cylinder. I ended up using a 02 wrx ACT Light weight flywheel, oem grade excedy 02 wrx clutch kit. a stock 2.5rs manual pedal set will work. you'll just need a good working slave cylinder and hoses/tubes to connect the rs master cylinder to the slave. I personally have a 02 wrx pedal set in my car, because i like the aluminum pedals, still bolted right in, and came with a master cylinder/brake cylinder.

All subaru turbo 5 speeds use the same clutch/flywheel/slave cylinder from 1991 to 2004. Legacy SS, all jdm turbo cars, and the first years of USDM wrx's.
(in 05 the forester xt and Legacy gt's got a push type slave. WRX's didnt switch to the push type untill 2006).

IMO, when doing research and collecting parts, treat the trans like a 2002 wrx trans. the internals and FD are different, but everything else will be the same to get it in your car. even the linkage, axles, driveshaft... are all the same as 02.

So I ran into an issue. the shop thats going to do the swap for me says the jdm 5spds came with different rear diffs and axels so if I wanted to do the 5spd swap I would have to replace all those. I was under the impression that I could just swap the 5spd in and the only thing I would have to change would be the driveshaft and of course pedel assembly, clutch slave and master since Im going from auto to manual. they want $3440 for the full jdm 5spd swap from a jdm wrx not sti. they said the sti one is older and it would be better to get a newer wrx jdm 5spd. what are your thoughts

so would a manual driveshaft fit up to my auto rear diff? do you have any knowledge of the jdm wrx trannys? strong, weak? also josh, do you know how the automatic wire connectors are wired up when converting to manual? like the "park" lockout and such? found a diy but its kind of just a quick run through and the grammar is not very clear. thanks!

You have a r160 rear diff in your car. All r160's have the same driveshaft bolt pattern. So yes, yours absolutly will work. it even has the same gear ratio.

That shop is insane. Please do not use them. jdm wrx transmissions go for about $600-700 on ebay SHIPPED.

Parts shouldn't be more than $1700, for trans, axles, driveshaft, pedal set, clutch kit... everything! it would take me 8 hours to have the auto trans out and the whole swap done. a "shop" can do it in the same time.
$3400 - 1700 (parts) = $1740 in labor. you are paying that shop $175/hour

a dealership charges $100/hr most small shops are $60-80/hr

Seriously, $3400 you could buy an sti 6 speed and install it yourself.

I know I will sound like a ****, but if you are not going to do this work yourself, then I'm done sharing information. Sell your car. go buy a new wrx that has everything you want and you never have to touch it.

I will be mad if you pay that much for that transmission. I had my STi 4.44 box for sale on the forums for months and months and eventually let it go for $500.

Previously I had bought another 4.44 JDM 5-speed from a local importer for $600.

I appreciate the help guys. The only reason i was considering having the shop do it is because they warranty all the work and parts. Plus its easier to take motor and tranny out together rather then seperate. Also not everyone has time for this kind of stuff and would rather pay someone who has the time to do it. With 50-60hr work weeks, college, and a baby, its hard to find time to **** let alone work on cars. I have a mk1 vw rabbit truck that i did a swap in years ago that has been waiting for me to finish painting it...has that happend? Nope.

I will be doing this myself now so all the help is needed. They wanted to charge 2k just for the tranny, driveshaft, rear diff, and axles and then all the additional parts needed to make it work in an auto was seperate. Thanks for that list josh. I have a pdf of all trannys and ratios already which is why i ask about the wrx tranny cause it has the fd and 5th ratio i need but i want to make sure it will handle 300whp. Plus i want the .738 5th which looks to be more rare one.

Also its not the mechanical part im worried about, though i do wanna have all my ducks in a row before ripping tranny out, but rather its the connectors and the wiring for the tranny i need to figure out. The diy says something about splicing one of the 2 wire connectors together to make the ecu think its in park in order to start the car and fuel pump. Can anyone clarify what to do with these connectors? Thanks again everyone?
