A sad turn for the subie community?

I live in Northern vermont where you basically drive a big giant truck, a honda, a neon/cavalier/taurus, or a subaru. Lately, I have been seeing a lot of RS's around. like 5 or 6 in a 30 mile radius regularly. anyway, most seem to be driven by non-enthusiasts except for 2 and these 2 are making me cry for our community. here's whats up:

The first one has been driving around for more then 2 months with a primer white body kit on his black car. it gets even better with his metallic green wiper blades, straight pipe (no muffler at all), and it rolls on those black rims you are supposed to put hub caps on. apperently he doesn't like hub caps. It also sports an elton john paint job of silver stars all over the side. :crazy:I cringe every time I see this thing. I mean, its been 2 months. at least go out and spend like $50 on some hub caps and spray paint. but that one isn't as bad as the second guy.

the second is all one color at least. I talked to the owner once at a store. he had an intercooler so I asked if it was turbo and he said "no". so I asked if he was working on a trubo build at a later date and he said no again and that it was just there for looks. then I asked him where his hood was. he told me that someone stole it and he was waiting on one from the dealer ship.:) thats understandable I guess. what made me angry was when I called his subaru... a subaru. here's the problem: He had a big Honda sticker in the back window and the 2.5RS emblem was now composed of a mixture of emblems that read "Civic RS 2.5 V-tec". :bonk:hmmmmmm...I deem him mentally handicaped. oh, he was also running some kind of hot rod tires in the back and it was lifted a little so the front aimed down but it looked rediculous.:stupid:

Is our community starting to turn into honda-land where everyone is buying there parts at walmart? I hope not but this makes me sad. I mean, its not even really funny to see this, I just feel bad for the cars. is the rest of the subaru world starting to look like this or is just over here?

I am a proud owner and it seems to me like these guys are disrespecting there cars somehow. well, just thought I'd share these beauties. sorry, no pics. I don't have a digital camara or phone cam yet.

The sad fact is, Subaru couldn't continue to cater only to the strictest of Enthusiasts.. I doubt Honda does either. Hence the mental giants we commonly read about with their Wal-mart modifications. It's the price you pay fortunate, or unfortunate as that may turn out to be.

Frankly, I'd rather the stoopids, such as the above examples, exist if it means that us enthusiasts have a continued base for our hobby. If no one bought these cars, Subaru would abandon the market, and us with it.

Why are hondas so prevalent and numerous and enjoy a very large active enthusiast community? Because for ever 1 or 2 "enthusiasts" there are 10 to 15 'stoopids' also buying the product.

Live and let live.. their bad taste doesn't effect my enthusiast hobby, they don't hinder me in any way, and I don't feel associated to those types of people because we own the same make and model of car. The people in the know, know whats up.

This is one of the few markets that breaks the rules of supply and demand. The more demand, the more pieces made, more pieces made means productions costs can be distributed farther. all of this means lower prices for us.

Let the dumbasses do what they want. Although i would rather see more real enthusiasts but you cant always get what you want.

You can't expect an enthusiast following for cheap cars that are intended to get people from point A to point B.
Well, I'd not go so far as to say that.. The 'original' Auto enthusiasts did exactly that.. It was the staple of the American muscle car era as well, cheap cars with little to no power modified to be street machines. Hondas kinda fall into that category as well these days, as do in a small part our Subarus. (we just have better factory support than say Honda for the modding community, IMHO anyways. They are relatively cheap cars, that aren't much out of the box, that can be turned into relative beasts with a few timely mods.

Now, having said that, Subarus also fall into the second category you mention, and thats exclusivity. This isn't so much by virtue of them being such vaunted sports cars, like say a Ferrari or Lotus, but more like, They are rarer than most production vehicles, and come from a somewhat lesser publicized form of motorsport (not to detract from it's popularity, but WRC say isn't as popular in EU or USA as say even F1 is by comparison.)

So in effect, we get both subsets of 'enthusiast', those looking for exclusivity from the cars rarity, and performance enthusiasts who take the core and build a monster from relatively simple beginnings.

There is still exclusivity based on the sheer rarity of the vehicles. We won't ever be as big as Honda in this regard, and I think many are probably more pleased by this than upset by it. There are certainly more 'turn my DD Subaru into a rally ready monster' enthusiasts than the latter.

Either way, people that aren't enthusiasts that rice out their subys don't reflect poorly on the rest of the community.. these cars, say way more than any poor mod or ricer ever could anyways.

Drakuun, have you ever been to Northern California/Nevada? There are more Subarus on the road than SUVs.

I understand what your view on the "exclusivity" of Subarus but the fact of the matter is 90% of Subarus line is tailored to the average person looking for average transportation. Mind you, I'm talking about the US market here. The only "exclusive" car Subaru makes is the STi. There is absolutely no reason for a commuter to buy it, and they don't. It was built for on and off-road performance and that's what the majority of STi owners use them for.

The WRX is a mixed market because it's more affordable and its daily driver qualities haven't been sacrificed for performance like the STi.

Then you get to the lower model Imprezas. They're reliable cars that gets good gas mileage and are safe. How can you expect any sort of exclusivity when this car is built around the top three things 98% of the US' driving population wants/needs?

I'm talking good old factual numbers here. Subaru sells less than 300,000 a year world wide... companies like the Big 3, Honda and Toyota can sell 300,000 units A MONTH of a single model. (The Taurus to date stands as the 'best selling car in a single month' with about 450,000 units about 5 or 6 years ago. IIRC) I owned a '98 Ford Tarus SHO that was one of 150,000 sold that year. Subaru's in the North American market are RARE no matter how you slice it.

My comments on the enthusiast market stand however.. Many of the people on this site represent it to it's fullest. They took Brightons, L's and RS' and turned them into STi's. That was the very rule of the "muscle car" era back in the day. Consider it along the lines of when the Big 3 caught on that people were swapping big blocks into their econo cars and created the more enthusiast version of the same cars in later years.

It was simply an option.. buy the factory enthusiast model, or, buy the econo and swap it.

Get a pic i want to see and cry. lol, And im going to stay uninvolved in the convo's above^^^. i have only seen one cheaply done up Subaru that literally had a 4-5 foot wing on the back of it :(. Just think of an STI spolier, mount two more on top, and thats what it looked like.

I will attest to the fact that norcal is suby filled. 5 RS's spotted within a 1.5 mile radius of my house. I personally know 2 live within a few blocks of me, not very friendly folks. A white modded sti lives down the block and never takes notice of my gc8 or bugeye. I guess californians are THAT desensitised to subys. It really has taken over as the staple car to be bought around here. They're everywhere, which is actually a fact I enjoy.

Saw a horrid green GC sedan with a custom hunter green paint job, body kit, aluminum wing and Altezzas roll by while I was pulling out of my local dealership yesterday. It looked like the work had been done professionally, but I still hated it.

There's this old skool green L w/ GDA C-West wing and cannon muffler. Drives and revs crazy. He's lucky I haven't met him on the road...... muahahaaha

WRX/22T EVO3-16G-8cm swapped would WHOOP him SO SUPER BAD!!! lolz
but then again I don't want to do that because then he'd be looking for me and the nmaybe stealz my parts..... *sigh* kids...... it's scary!!! pretty soon it'll be Subarus getting stolen for parts!!

I don't mind seeing riced-out Civics. They are good for a laugh, and there are TONS of Civics. But when someone rices out a relatively rare '98 - '01 RS, that's disturbing. I mean, there are only 14k or so of these cars around......

probably less than that, though. think of how many were made into track cars, put in the hands of overzealous and young drivers, or were victimized by idiots in SUVs.....quite a few have been totaled.

 seems like we hear about at least one a week being in a serious accident or totaled on here. extrapolate that over the country over the years and the numbers drop quite a bit.
