any one pondered this besides for me? the idea would be:

RHD swapped GC chassis (to clear exh DP on usa steering u joint side)

evo 8/9 4g63 + bellhousing adapter of some sort+ mounting

obviously inline 4 will be longer, so probably V mount radiator and FMIC will be needed, perhaps even cut the front apron to fit. Exhaust like a SR20DET on the left side (so RHD GC8 would be most ideal), evo is really small intake manifold, and wouldnt have clearance issue on taht side.

dont flame me, its blatent fact that a modern evo 4g63 is waay stronger and reliable under heavy abuse than anything motorsports that subaru has.....

ponder ponder?

another idea is to try to use subaru x member to mount the rear of the 4g63, and then fab a front X member - ala GDA U brace style. or hack a u-brace to work as one :p

4g63 also cools very well for some reason.

haha. 4/20 bump on a thread from 2007.

I would be interested if somebody could convince brydon to be the weld-man on the project.

i would wire it, and figure out the logistics. anyone in the bay area want to contribute?

unholy union of power/body. would be ridiculously fast

Oh, and with the length of the 4g63. I would expect it to have some hood issues even after the crossmember stuff is figured. It would be fun to play with if I had both cars for free, or really cheap.

We did a FWD SOHC 1.5l Mirage to EVO III 4G63 AWD conversion.
It was a pain but we got it done & running.

Buddy that did all of the fabrication fabs tube framed drag cars so it was not too hard for him to get done.
He fabbed a few parts like the front x-member, rear diff mount, adapted a civic radiator for use on the car, chopped & reshaped the OEM gastank so the diff fit on the car.

He also did a FMIC with fully TIG welded aluminum tubing, adapted a 3" TBE for use, made a EWG O2 housing & installed a clipped / ported 18G on the car.

Car is surprisingly FAST with just these little bolt-ons @ just 14psi (owner had it running with no wastgate line for a week or so then lowered boost to 19psi @ my suggestion, & then lowered boost to 14psi to keep things safe until he gets his BIG injectors & MAF translator on).

Car is now fully EVO III bodied & will be going to paint soon.

I think a 4G63 will fit in a Subaru pretty easily - if you have GOOD welding/fabrication skills..

You can put anything into anything if you have GOOD welding/fabrication skills!

The Evo VIII/IX motor is going to be rotated anti-clockwise ninety degrees, right? Well if the valve cover is going to stick out past where the hood will clear, then cut a hole! You could drop the hood down on it like V8s with the blower through the hood. :D

DO IT

Buddy has done the old

KP61 Starlet / Rotary (or Turbo Rotary) conversion 1000 times (we are Puerto Rican...)
Datsun 1200 / Rotary (Turbo Rotary (13BREW) too)
TE72 Corolla 2JZ swap
AE86 13BREW Rotary swap
Mirage - EVOIII 4G63 AWD conversion
Countless back halved & 3/4 tube framed drag cars

1 Civic AWD 4G63 conversion in line to be built
1 240sx RB26 AWD conversion in line to be built (owner of the EVO III conversion)

& does not even own/drive a street car...lol...

Alot of Subaru fabrication - (my fault)....

I'd actually dump the Suabru tranny If I were doing this swap as it is a piece of crap.
The old 4G63 trannys can hold some power, & if it breaks just have it rebuilt by Shepard - then it will be capable of running 10's for less than 2k fully built & out the door.

I have a lot of interest on this subject.
Please, keep it up.

Can it be done?
I realize we would have to strip the GC8 bare naked, since it doesn't end at swaping the engine and tranny...
What about the diffs? axles? how will you keep the AWD system?
What about the streering rack?
Harness? I don't think so. I think we would need an aftermarket EMS ie MoTec, Haltech etc.
What about the fuel delievery system?
Different/custom gas tank?
Jesus christ.

I have the balls to do it, as I already restored and built a GC8 from the ground up both bodywork and engine-wise so I wouldn't mind doing it again.

Overall, I think it would be killer having the lightweight & agile GC8 chassis and the power and reliability of the EVO's engine and tranny.

So... keep it up guys.

You are trying way to hard! Standalone? Why? Merge the harness like a WRX swap. Only problem would be it would be way easier as the EVO has less wires.

I would make a custom tube framed cradle for the motor and use the stock a-arms and steering rack. That way you could use the stock suspension and hubs.

You are now custom axles and driveshaft away from a EVO powered GC/GD.

As for fuel system, gas tank, etc... Why why why! Why would you want to change so much? The gas tank isn't good enough for you? The fuel lines are fuel lines. A subaru is no worse than a EVO.
