any one pondered this besides for me? the idea would be:

RHD swapped GC chassis (to clear exh DP on usa steering u joint side)

evo 8/9 4g63 + bellhousing adapter of some sort+ mounting

obviously inline 4 will be longer, so probably V mount radiator and FMIC will be needed, perhaps even cut the front apron to fit. Exhaust like a SR20DET on the left side (so RHD GC8 would be most ideal), evo is really small intake manifold, and wouldnt have clearance issue on taht side.

dont flame me, its blatent fact that a modern evo 4g63 is waay stronger and reliable under heavy abuse than anything motorsports that subaru has.....

ponder ponder?

another idea is to try to use subaru x member to mount the rear of the 4g63, and then fab a front X member - ala GDA U brace style. or hack a u-brace to work as one :p

4g63 also cools very well for some reason.

exhaust routing would be interesting, i wonder if you could get a 3inch pipe to cross back over to the other side.

i think even with a vmount setup space would be very limited up front. i/c piping would be amazingly short tho with a manifold setup similar to the stock evo.

i have to agree tho 4g63 is way superior and would be very interesting to see....cant beat an iron block inline

no need to worry about exh piping. we'll RHD the GC8 first!!!

the real puzle would be how to clear the front apron. may have to cut the middle out and run hood pins, radiator will for sure be a challenge, but a trick my VW friend did on his crazy 330wheel 89 cab, was to run 2 small intercoolers int eh corner- like a S4, connected in a line. not the prettiest, but worked pretty well.

could be like

Intercooler -------_________Radiator with piping ______ ----------to intercooler

maf would be on opposite side, so perhaps take the place of the wiper bottle?

sure, it will weight more- but probaly not that much more. no up pipe, no 3 piece exhaust manifold, no giant heavy intake manifold......

EVO wiring and ECU is super easy to deal with (in comparison), OEM evo oil cooler is better than S202........ alot of things make it pretty interesting idear.

everyone knows that 4g63 is pretty killer, and we all like GC8's....

haha.

I have thought of doing this setup on my old Peugeot 505 Turbo wagon. Take a more reliable motor and an awd setup and get them in the wagon. It would have been a sick car to have.

I also thought of keeping it rwd and goin with an SR setup.

It could have been done.

Doing this in a GC like said above would be tight, but can work for sure. With a bit of work and time and money it can be done.

i think a 6 bolt old school 4g63 may be easier... cheaper and way easier to find parts for, trust me as a former evo owner , if you break something engine wise its $$$$. as a plus damn near every 6 bolt 4g63 improvement has been documented. plus if it breaks (and it will) parts really are a dime a dozen.

i think this would be a kick a$$ swap!!! hum......

I'm in the process of doing this exact swap as I type. Right now I'm stuck trying to find a R158 toyota trans. I've already got the adaptor, etc. Plan is to use a Evo VIII+ turbo/manifold setup as it's already facing the correct way. I'm looking at going ahead with the RHD conversion, but I can't find a steering rack to see if it will work. I suspect it will be easier to keep it LHD with the turbo and exhaust DP routing, although it could still fit.....if I can find a rack I will defiantly do it.

if you're going to mid mount it, bolt it up to a mirage fwd trans, and have a transferse MR car. but thats pretty crazy, and the kinda stuff that only nutso people with lotsa welders do.

FR would be easy, but EJ20>Sr20. sr20 is a b it on the weaksauce side. 4g63 is king as far as 4 bangers go

for drifting however, or FR app, Sr20 works well

thats too crazy. the reason to do a GC8 is because the chassis is actually inherently balanced, unlike a sideways screw mount transfer case poop setup that mitsu keeps sticking to. EVO is great, but man, its just a widebody civic with CRV everything swap with all components beefed up to super aftermarket. honestly, thats about it. obviously 4g63 > Crvtec+turbo, but the inherent DNA is the same.

now if we were baller....... BE legacy + 4g63 evo 9 motorswap, with driveline shifted back 6 inches... somehow. that would be the king.

the GC8 is an exceptionaly light and reasonably strong chassis. the balance was engineeered around the boxer engine yes, but more so the symetrical and very lightweight AWD system and footwork. the boxer motor is vibration balanced yes, but that dosnt make the car go fast. Engine power and reliability make the car scoot and keep scooting- thats how you win.
