i was lookin for one of these when i found my impreza. ive always had a spot for one of these.
i had never really taken much notice of the S30 before (kind of always thought of 510s when i thought datsun, and S130/Z31 when i thought of zcars). ive been head over heels in love since i revisited the idea of a S30. like realizing the girl next door was the perfect one all along

z31. 88SS is my dream.
git it gurrrrrrrl

not sure if Suspension Techniques makes stuff for the older Z chassis, but i had their lowering springs with bilstein dampers and it fucking rocked. solid and planted all the time.

half ass update...

basically spent a week trying to figure out this sloppy ass ignition system wiring, couldnt figure out what the fuck was going on with the distributor (wired for electronic but had points-type serial number) before finally finding out about pertronix just now  fml
such fine craftsmanship from previous owner

- tracked down actual electrical problems to ignition switch (starter). was gonna just fab up a button/swtich panel and use a push button start, but need to make sure its making contact in run/on. im only getting ~4V at coil, but thats with a beat ass battery sitting at around 9V (obv needs to be replaced)
- clutch master cylinder is crap
- trans fluid leak seems to have just been due to slightly loose drain plug but i believe still has plenty of fluid in it, and looks good enough
- think i have brake lines leak-free but will prob replace brake master cylinder as its full of swamp looking crap
- need to order all new pads/shoes/rotors
- picked up new/used tires
- took off dash cap, dash only has one medium size crack (relative to most). im fine with that, i think ill just leave it like so.

i need to get a new welder. still not able to spring for something that does everything i want so gonna get what i need for now, which is basically patching sheetmetal and fabbing up coilovers. i think a hobart 140 would do the trick eh? rated to 1/4" so im mostly just wondering if thats enough for the coilover job, as i expect thats about the caliber of most future projects itll see. also needs to run on 110 since its all i got in the garage space.

new plan is basically just get suspension. ground control sleeves and bilstein (probably) inserts.
as i can afford it: camber plates, OBX LSD (maaaaaaybe quaife, i got a buddy with a hook up), sway bars.

although stock control arms give hardly any adjustment (literally only front toe) the stock specs are fine and with a set of decent camber plates i should get 80-90% of the adjustability i really need.

then hopefully a better seat (id like it to be vintage) and i should be ready for the track.

oh and i picked up what i believe to be a pretty valuable vintage MOMO steering wheel. the closest match i can find is on ebay as a "MOMO 320mm steering wheel lenkrad volante PORSCHE 911R-S BMW ALFA" for $495. that one is nice, this one def looks the 30+ years old it is but i got it for enough that i could prob sell that badge and it will have ended up costing me $50.

regardless its *just* what i wanted so it aint goin nowhere. old, mean, plain, thick, small diameter.

you don't need to replace unless its bad. as in, not working. all you really need to do is take the reservoir off and fill it with brake cleaner. swish it around and all the gunk will be gone. then a simple bleed and flush of the lines to get the rest.

ok sweet ill prob just do that then

particularly good as im realizing i need to not spend a lot right now before i go on a trip to norway/holland next month. but when i get reimbursed for that along with tax returns its gonna be like fuckin christmas up in this bitch

get me a deal on rotros pads and shoes yo

rotors: 56.00
pads: 12.15
shoes: 18.99

however..it may not turn out to be that much of a deal after shipping.

good luck with it - have owned/built many of these over the years ranging from high compression NA with triple webers/mikuni's, high compresson fuel injection with ITB's, turbo of various configurations, etc.

should you need a source for the Ground Control, Bilstein stuff, etc, let us know.

as far as the dash, the cracks are more than common...not cracked is what's rare at this point! But, it will only eventually get worse. The caps are awful...none of em fit well, they all warp, they look blatantly obvious when you're in the car. You may wish to try a combination of epoxy/filler and a texturized paint (or paint, then flocking?). Or, if you've got patience and a free weekend, remove the dash and rewrap - I did this on one of mine, total pain in the neck, but the end result was fantastic. Nice new foam, stitched/wrapped around gauges, etc.

ahh thank you sir. sounds pretty good to me. let me see what it would be locally and also what it would be for semi-high-performance shit (do they even make high performance stuff for drums?)
