Wrong oil filter. Is this ok?

On northursalia's site it says that the subaru oil filter numbered as 15208AA100 is for the turbo model engines. My dealer gave me this one and without looking, I took it.

Will this one fit and be ok to run or should I go back and get the 15208AA060 filter which is made for the NA engines?

Thanks.

The only car that had a different filter was the STI. It was a little smaller becuase of the oilpan difference I think. But all of the filters will work fine. In japan some STIs had twinscroll headers and the oil filter came closer to that header. Or so it looks like that to me.

So it should work fine than? Over on northursailia's site it says they should all fit, but I want to know why they would bother making different models? Is there something different about the turbo model filter that could hurt my car in any way?

From here, it's basically just the reverse of what you have done. I use Mobil 1 synthetic and the Bosch filter as personal preference. If you choose to use a Subaru filter, 4 cylinder naturally aspirated models get a 15208AA060, 4 cylinder turbo models get a 15208AA100, and 6 cylinder models get a SOA5165109, though any of the three filters will actually fit any engine just fine. Whatever fluids and filter you use, open your filter and one bottle of oil. There is a rubber seal on the base of your oil filter- dip your finger in the new oil and pre-lubricate this rubber O ring seal. Spin the new oil filter on hand tight, then give about 1/4 turn more to snug it down.

his site is a little out of date in that respect. subaru now uses the turbo oil filter on all motors except the ez30/ez30r. that part number now supercedes the old one. they switched to that due to the new design of the exhaust on 06+ 2.5L engines and a bad batch of filters they got that originally replaced it.

Cool. Good to know. Also the owners manual says the engine requires 4.2 quarts. Around how much can you give or take on that and be fine? I think I might put in 4.4 to be safe everthing gets coated.

As you can tell this will be my first personal oil change and I'm kind of a perfectionist.

I live 30 mins away from subaruwrxparts.com also the other dealers around here usually price match their kick ass prices.

No ordering online for me.

I have the black turbo filter.

start with 4 qt. and add till u hit the full line on the dipstick. if the black filter is smaller than the one your taking off its going to hold a little less oil than before, you want to try not to overfill it.

+1 Subaru uses the 15208AA100 filter on all 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, and 2.5L N/A and Turbo engines. And always remember to change the drain plug crush washer everytime you change the oil. The H6 engines are the only ones that require a different oil filter.

Right again. Always start with 4 quarts. You are never going to get 100% of the old oil out of the engine. So if it calls for 4.2 quarts, start with 4. Start the engine and let it run enough to prime the oil filter if you didn't do that before putting the filter on the engine. Leave the car sit for a few minutes while you check your other fluids, air filter, tire pressure, etc. Then check the oil level and add from there.

Well it worked out ok.

I bought a piece of crap oil pan thingy that ended up overflowing and covering my garage floor with oil. Other than that it went ok.

I put in exactly 4.2quarts and I primed the filter before putting it on. Started it up and let it run for a minute or 2 and checked the dipstick. Something is screwy with my dipstick though. It doesn't give me a good solid reading.

One side of it will be completely covered with oil and the other side will have oil smears on it. I do the whole wipe off/dip back in thing but it comes out messed up everytime I try to check it.

I think I should be good though.

I more than likely won't do another one of my oil changes. I didn't save any money by doing it myself and I would have stayed a lot cleaner having it done at the Subie dealer.

As long as the filter was for a four cylinder engine, n/a or turbo doesn't matter, and not a 6 cylinder, your fine. The main reason they had a "turbo" filter was because of the exhaust manifold on turbo vehicles (the the larger filter heated up due to exhaust temps The smaller filter wasn't close enough to be affected by the heat). I have used the sti filter on mine (Makes it easier to change with my header) until they switched to the universal one and no problems, also the 04-05 N/A foresters came from the factory using the STI turbo filter. The filters are interchangable. But they did switch to one style filter now for all 4 cyl.
