I haven't found any concrete confirmation on this so please speak up.

Crossmembers: Will the 5-speed cross member work for the 6 speed transmission? I know it needs the 6 speed mount.
Yes, I used my stock 99RS trans crossmember with the 6spd.

For the trans mount I used my existing STI Group N 5spd mount and it fit just fine with the 6spd.

Today the junk yard is having a 40% off sale so I'm starting to put my swap together.

Rear diff - 2000 OBS (from what I see online its a 3.9fd but I'll count teeth)
4EAT driveshaft - 96 Impreza LX Coupe

Then on Tuesday I drive to LA to buy a 2005 STi transmission that is supposedly very very low mileage and take it to a Subaru mechanic friend for inspection.

and I'm in negotiations over a 6mt shift linkage and axle stubs.

I believe that should do it. I'd love to run an R180 with a real LSD but that will have to wait for another time. As far as the DCCD goes, I want to get the DCCDpro with the auto setting but again, I think that will have to be postponed but on the short list.

swap is almost done.

Lessons learned:

1 - The strap on a transmission jack might seem like its not doing anything, but it is.

2 - Even if the car feels stable at first, those jack stands can go at any time. My driveway is sloped but the top is pretty flat. We had it on stands for a couple days and then when we went to bring the 6 speed over I had to jack the front end up with the back end on stands already. It got to a point where the rear stands just toppled over. Luckily nobody was under the car and somehow the car never came off of the jack so I kept control of it but **** that was scary.

3 - The 5 speed shift linkage knuckle will work with minimal modification.

UPDATE:

After getting the interior put back together I realized that using the 5mt linkage knuckle put the shifter centered by where reverse is. Its usable but awkward. So we did some modifying. Now the shifter sits centered horizontally but vertically its just slightly lower than center. I think its just fine where it is.

4 - The '15 STi shift linkage works fine. I bought a brand new take off (buyer of a new sti upgraded to the short shifter) and it fits and works fine.

Update:

I don't like having rigged parts like I made unless I have to. That said, I finally got the OEM knuckle in as well as a Kart Boy short shifter. I did the SS first and then tried it. Shorter throws but it still felt just a bit off. Installed the knuckle and the shifter centered itself better and has an overall much better feel going into gears.

SO...

While you CAN use the 5 speed shift knuckle like I showed, I wouldn't suggest it as a long term solution.

Adding to that: Changing that Knuckle is a PITA once the car is put back together! You need to loosed the carrier bearing as well as jack up the engine to get the angle correct or it will never line up. I was 5 minutes from drilling a hole in the side of the trans tunnel just to get that bolt lined up when a friend suggested the carrier bearing part.

I am currently running an 2011 5mt and rear end on my 95L. I also have 06/07 4/2pot brakes already (installed new oem backing plates to my rear hubs). My clutch masters fx350 is starting to slip after less than 1.5 years of daily driving on 340wtq. I'm seriously considering doing the 6mt swap and getting it over with, because surely after upgrading the clutch the trans is going to go and leave me stranded.

If I want to run the 08+ 6mt and r180 rear end, are there two options?

1-hybrid rear axles with r180 inner cup and shaft and suberdave's races to add r160 outer cups

-and-

2-special rear hubs from early r180 gc that has 5x100 but different inner hub splines? Could I just buy the hubs for that model year and press in new rear bearings and those hubs into my rear knuckles? Sorry if I misread the thread but it's been a long day and I'm bushed.

Also, if I want to do dccd pro could I use one speed input? I only have a magnet and hall effect pickup setup and this is running an electronic speedometer. I know the newer cars use four wheel speed sensors.

What if I get a 2015+ six speed and rear diff, would the shifter and its linkage work in my 95? Would I be able to use 04+ center driveshaft or only 2015+ driveshaft?

I notice carbon shaft sellers have 04-07, 08-12, and 15+ versions for the six speeds. If I go the six speed route, I need to find out which center shaft is needed. The one I'm currently running with my 2011 5mt and rear is a 2002-2007 driveshaft. I wonder if whichever year range six speed setup I choose determines the six speed shaft, since the 93-01 cars are slightly different. Drive shaft shop does sell a carbon shaft for the 93-07 5mt though, so maybe the six speed swap won't be that difficult.

The best thing for my suspension would be to get the suberdave adapters and be able to run the r180 rear, I don't want to be wasting r160 diffs.

I also tried contacting dave at suberdave dot com and that address didn't work

Hopefully the trans I get comes with the exhaust hanger, lol I sold the new one I had to stg2lgcy00, hahahaaa!!! Congrats on the progress, by the way. Looks like I will be doing the same soon

^Oh seriously? Thought you had more than one lying around.

Couple months so far running mine and unfortunately starting to get noise from my rear diff, like a repetitive cycling hum that speeds up as I speed up... no matter in or out of gear. Going to have a shop take a look at it but most likely need to pull the R160 for inspection. Almost just want to get a stock 3.9 R160 and toss it in there for the meantime to avoid downtime (middle of snowboard season, hehe).

I had a few, all different types because I couldn't get the correct part number from anyone and needed it quick.

So is your r180 making noise?

Forgot to ask, will the driveshaft that comes with the 08-12 transmission and rear end be the correct length? I know the 08+ cars had several changes including longer axles, is the transmission spaced further from the rear diff in the 08+ cars?

Well, pulled the trigger on a six speed driveline. Anyone have some spare rear sti axles? The most difficult part of this will probably be getting the correct races from suberdave, I won't be able to check my rear axles until the car is down and won't be able to order the races until I get a set of sti rears. Oh, and a clutch that will last years with 450wtq and not kill my foot is going to be fun to find.

R160, but yes its making noise all the time now at any speed in or out of gear, and while going straight or turning... fml

Has a Cusco 1.5 way lsd inside as well and I made sure to use Subaru OEM lsd gear oil. (added pic)

Going back to page 1 of the thread

Final Drives:
'02-'05 USDM WRX 5MT: 3.54
'04-'05 USDM STI 6MT: 3.90
'06-'07 USDM STI 6MT: 3.54
Based on these final drives, it is possible to use an '02-'05 WRX 3.54 final drive R160 rear differential with an '06-'07 STI 3.54 final drive 6MT transmission. Other combinations of trans and rear diff will require the ring and pinion on the rear differential to be swapped to the proper final drive.
I still have yet to get the car diagnosed but I'm still leaning towards putting in another good R160 while my current one gets repaired etc..

Since I have a USDM 05 STI 6spd and have to use a 3.9 FD rear end, what years/models came with a 3.9 R160?

Sucks cause I have a ring & pinion from an 03 WRX in great condition but won't be able to use it with my tranny :(

Is that cusco lsd mechanical or viscous? I don't think the mech ones need special fluid, correct me if I'm wrong...

I have a 3:9 on my 2011 5mt, they both came from a 2011 wrx. I also have a 3:9 rear and my previous trans which I believe is an 05 impreza sport wagon or something similar.

3:9 comes in a lot of years

It's mechanical.

Good to know that some newer models have 3.9 R160, forgot that I had a transmission chart to reference too.

Checking my local pick n pull website, looks like my best bet from their inventory would be to grab a rear end from a 99 Legacy, 01 Outback, 02 Outback... whatever car has least miles & is a 5spd.

I've got a cusco RS 1.5/2 way in my R180 and the cusco brand 80W140 oil smoothed out the back end greatly. With the 75W90 I put in initially, I was binding and clunking all over the place. Night and day difference for my application at least.

Hmm I might have to try the Cusco brand oil once I put the 1.5 way back in eventually.

I drove the car over 300 miles this weekend (no choice unfortunately) and had to deal with howling/scraping sounds from the rear diff the whole time.

Can't wait any longer so I'll pull the diff later this week and grab a 3.9 R160 at pick n pull by Friday or Saturday.

I'm only going to be able to find older models at pick n pull so based on this chart: Subaru Transmission Chart

...any of the following AWD 5spd rear diffs should work for my 3.9 application.. please correct if wrong:

1995 EJ18 Impreza
1996 EJ22 Impreza
1996 EJ18 Impreza
1997 EJ18 Impreza
1997-01 EJ22 Impreza
2002-2004 Impreza TS
2004 Impreza Outback
1994-2002 Legacy L/Brighton

^For the Legacy's thats all in reference to non-GT models

Also are there any particular markings on the R160 ring gear so I can pop the diff cover and KNOW for sure I have a 3.9 FD? Or at least how many ring gear teeth are on a 3.9 R160?

Yeah, on the outer edge of the ring gear is the ratio. Easy once you pull the cover, but you have to drop the diff out first

Ok, I'll make sure to look at that after I remove it.

I have about 9 different Legacy's to pick from on the lot but just going to start with the newest model I find w/ the least miles & is 5spd and go from there. Rear diffs there run about $76.99 so thats totally worth it to get up n running again while I figure out what to do with the 1.5 way.
