Starter Interrupt Issues

Hello - 2000 Subaru RS 2.5
I got in my car the other day, always use the key no fob, when I attempted to crank the engine, everything went dark. Before I had attempted the crank, in the ON position, everything looked and felt normal. Problem is that I cannot get the vehicle out of Starter Interrupt. As the car sits now, with no key in, there's a rapid clicking sound (assuming relay). When the key is in the ON position the clicking will stop. None of the solutions in the user manual have got me anywhere. Short press and long press of the Emergency Override Button do nothing, this is in all possible key positions. Turning to the lovers and experts for help. Has anyone encountered this before?

Did you try disconnecting the negative battery terminal, waiting a minute, and reconnecting it?

The clicking sound is more likely to be coming from the solenoid (small cylinder) on the starter instead of the relay. There could be a short somewhere or the unit itself is bad, I've never heard of that issue before.

so if the car is sitting there NO key and is making a relay click with out lights flashing or anything that doesn't sound like an alarm.

unplug the ignition switch (pull the cover off the column) see if that kills the clicking. wondering if the ignition cylinder is bad

The valet light blinks like the alarm is going off. The power door locks function, as in the car reacts to them being locked/unlocked, but it just makes an awful grinding noise instead of actually locking/unlocking. I can actually disable the alarm when sitting in the car, doors closed. Problem is, it resets to armed and the moment I do anything, valet light goes back to triggered.
