Never heard of a 98RS Gasket problem? Is that why cars were called in as a recall to get a coolant additive? FUCK you, Subaru, for raping customers up the asshole.
As mentioned above, it's not Subaru, it's the dealership. If you have a problem, report it to Subaru of America. Explain your situation to them and tell them the way the dealership treated you. Before you say "Fuck Subaru" talk to Subaru first. They may be able to help, they may not.
The 98 2.5DOHC engines did NOT have the coolant additive recall on them. Only the 99+ 2.5 SOHC engines.
And to repeat again, Subaru isn't raping people. I work at a dealership, and if you treat them right, most of the time they will treat you right. But don't expect them to bend over backwards for a car thats 9 years old with over 60k miles. They, like you, have no idea how hard that car was run for the first 100k km's and if there is no service history at a Subaru dealership, they sure as hell aren't going to pay for any repairs. Their powertrain warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles which was pretty damn good in 1998 model. Shit happens, things break.
Since your car doesn't have the recall on it, there is no extended coverage on your head gaskets. And even if there was, that recall only applies to external coolant leaks, not internal combustion chamber leaks. So you wouldn't even be covered in that respect.
Chances are if you bought the car used at a dealership, they probably offered you an extended warranty. It sounds like you probably passed this up. Most of those warrantys will cover at least powertrain components such as an engine block. Once again, you lose.
