went to deniedmywarranty.org and stumbled upon this little gem:

Engine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Chiyo L.

Make: 1998 Impreza 2.5RS

Mileage: 107000km

Time Out Of Use: 6 months

Problem And Likely Cause: Blown headgaskets resulting in overheating/cracked block

Reason Given For Denial: No longer warrantied

Your Story: I purchased my vehicle with 92000km on it. I had it inspected and the results were fine. A week afterwards, the check engine light came on and Subaru just reset the ECU and that was that. A few weeks later the erratic overheating begins and the CE light pops up again. Subaru tells me I'm low on coolant so they top it up for no charge and do another ECU reset and says I'll be fine. 20 minutes after I leave the CE lights come up again. I was told that my idle was just higher than normal which was why it was popping up and that I needn't worry. The next oil change which is now past my 100km warranty coverage, was at Subaru and I let them know that the overheating is happening more often and they now diagnose it as a cracked block. So I am now not covered under warranty left with a grenaded engine. I bring up that I suspected all along that it was blown headgaskets and they say they have never heard of that problem on 98 phase I engines?

Never heard of a 98RS Gasket problem? Is that why cars were called in as a recall to get a coolant additive? FUCK you, Subaru, for raping customers up the asshole.

EDIT: typo upon instead of up

I wouldn't say Fuck Subaru, that sounds like a dealership fucked you not the whole company. If you went to a reputable dealership they would have fixed it the first time.

Time for a swap.

I don't think it happened to him as he said he stumbled upon the article (actually says "stumbled up," typo maybe?). But either way, that guy should have found any number of sources that reference that recall and rub it in those retards faces.

its not subarus fault its the freekin dealerships

Guess who represents Subaru? Yup, that's right: the dealerships. Negligence on their part in keeping their dealerships in line makes them just as guilty as the dealerships who screw people over.

Quit being all diplomatic and pussy-footing your way around an argument. James is right- fightclub isn't being used the way it should be.

The head gasket recall is good for 100,000 miles, not km, go to another dealership and get it warrantied.
Doesn't that only apply if the car was taken in for the recal?

How would I know if my car was taken in for the recall?

As mentioned above, it's not Subaru, it's the dealership. If you have a problem, report it to Subaru of America. Explain your situation to them and tell them the way the dealership treated you. Before you say "Fuck Subaru" talk to Subaru first. They may be able to help, they may not.

The 98 2.5DOHC engines did NOT have the coolant additive recall on them. Only the 99+ 2.5 SOHC engines.

And to repeat again, Subaru isn't raping people. I work at a dealership, and if you treat them right, most of the time they will treat you right. But don't expect them to bend over backwards for a car thats 9 years old with over 60k miles. They, like you, have no idea how hard that car was run for the first 100k km's and if there is no service history at a Subaru dealership, they sure as hell aren't going to pay for any repairs. Their powertrain warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles which was pretty damn good in 1998 model. Shit happens, things break.

Since your car doesn't have the recall on it, there is no extended coverage on your head gaskets. And even if there was, that recall only applies to external coolant leaks, not internal combustion chamber leaks. So you wouldn't even be covered in that respect.

Chances are if you bought the car used at a dealership, they probably offered you an extended warranty. It sounds like you probably passed this up. Most of those warrantys will cover at least powertrain components such as an engine block. Once again, you lose.

And what kind of inspection did they perform? A safety inspection (which has nothing to do with the head gaskets or engine block), a overall visual inspection (which doesn't mean shit with an internal combustion chamber leak), or an actual cooling system inspection in which they pressurized the cooling system to check for any leaks or drop in pressure? If you bought it used and as-is, they probably didn't do any of it.

Like I said, I talked to a Subaru techie the other day who actually said that he had to replace more p2 EJ25s HGs than p1s. The technicians only know what they work on, so that's what they have to work with. That engine, in some form or another was produced from 1996-98, so it was around for almost as long as the p2 SOHC.

I am the owner of a 1998 EJ25, so I hope this doesn't happen to me when I get my running car back sometime soon, but there's only so much you can do to make it fault-proof. From there, it's all about engine design and maintenance.

EDit for PG-13

Don't come into a Subaru forum and post F**k Subaru. That's like going into an Irish pub and saying "F**k the Irish!" We'll beat the living S**T out of you and then some.
Plus this article is one dealership in one town in one state etc. etc. That's like saying that all white people are f**king racists just because you read about someone somewhere who experienced an act of racism acted out by white person. Do you see where I'm going with this you ignorant dumb f**k.
All I know is that if I had your standards of thinking I would claim that all people who post here are ignorant dumb f**ks including me just because you posted what you did. Just think before you post generalized statements like this.

I've been with our dealership for 3 weeks now, and have already seen 5 (maybe more) HG jobs on phase 2 engines. HOWEVER, 4 of them are 00's, the 5th was an 01. And 3 of them we managed to get partial warranty coverage on even though they were well past the 5yr/100,000 km powertrain warranty. It WAS a very big hassle, but if your dealership is willing to go to the trouble of fighting for you, Subaru Canada is very good.

The bigger thing to take note of is the proportion of phase 2 to phase 1 engines. The phase 2 EJ25 has been in every base (and some uplevel) model of Subaru since 02, and was an option in the Impreza since 99, and Legacy since late-99. Previous to that, the Phase 1 was only in a few models and only appeared in the Impreza (the high-volume car in Subaru's lineup) for one year, in which the RS was extremely limited in numbers. Naturally you're going to get a lot more in terms of straight number, simply because there are a lot more out there.

This is not fight club worthy. Moved to General.
And I'm going to change "fuck" to "screw" in the title.

There's enough f-bombs in here already; we don't need to advertise them.
