Start with a rulebook. It will specify material, wall thickness, joint types and anchor point specs.

I don't know them offhand, but I would definately look up the official specs if I were going to have one made.

 

I think it has to be DOM, 1.75" diam, .095" wall thickness

Thanks guys! I have a friend who bulids custom motorcycle frames and I'm trying to research the material and find a few plans or photos so we can bulid this sucka! I'm hoping to strip the entire car and seam weld at the same time has anyone heard if any aluminum are ok?

Aluminum cages will not be legal anywhere in North America.

Ok just wondering what the options are out there, good ol' steel it is! (it may be a bit heavier but at least it's cheaper than Aluminum!)

He has a full cage built to satisfy RA requirements. I know it's DOM Steel but I don't know the size of the tubing.

 

Be the man, and go with Titanium... isnt that hard to weld...

 

Titanium isn't as stiff as steel is so its not really worth it

 

Read the links I posted, it says what you are allowed to use. If it isn't listed, then generally you can't use it.

If you use drawn over mandrel (needs to be an unalloyed carbon steel containing a maximum of 0.3% of carbon), the cage needs to be:
1.75" dia with a wall thickness of 0.095"

FIA allows CDS as well.

DOM is pretty much what most guys will use in the US for rally racing. The other stuff mentioned in the RA rulebook is virtually impossible to get in the United States i have been told by my metal fab guy...

lol. true that. I've seam welded a few cars before, and let me tell you. IT SUCKS! it takes sooooooo long to prep right and get right.

The labor involved in stripping the whole car down to have it done its just too much time and money for my project. Have you considered just seam welding around the shock towers, etc?

you do know area 1320 is right around the bend, right?

If you've got the funds I'm sure Ryan would love to talk to you about it. nd he's way more resonable than most shops. Save yourself money by stripping the inside and all the nasty souond deadening tar by yourself.

 

I can install anything you want. it all comes down to money. Im a big fan of SW racecars cages.
