Ill soon have a 2000 2.5 rs automatic which I intend to do an ej205 swap in and was wondering if there is any reason to NOT swap in a gc8 jdm sti 4.44 5spd tranny. I would not have to change anything else, according to my research, because my rear FDR is 4.44 and LSD. would it be better to just do a GD sti 6spd swap and change my rear diff R&P to 3.90? what are the major differences between these tranmissions? any benefit to going with one over the other? thanks

I appreciate the help guys. The only reason i was considering having the shop do it is because they warranty all the work and parts. Plus its easier to take motor and tranny out together rather then seperate. Also not everyone has time for this kind of stuff and would rather pay someone who has the time to do it. With 50-60hr work weeks, college, and a baby, its hard to find time to **** let alone work on cars. I have a mk1 vw rabbit truck that i did a swap in years ago that has been waiting for me to finish painting it...has that happend? Nope.

I will be doing this myself now so all the help is needed. They wanted to charge 2k just for the tranny, driveshaft, rear diff, and axles and then all the additional parts needed to make it work in an auto was seperate. Thanks for that list josh. I have a pdf of all trannys and ratios already which is why i ask about the wrx tranny cause it has the fd and 5th ratio i need but i want to make sure it will handle 300whp. Plus i want the .738 5th which looks to be more rare one.

Also its not the mechanical part im worried about, though i do wanna have all my ducks in a row before ripping tranny out, but rather its the connectors and the wiring for the tranny i need to figure out. The diy says something about splicing one of the 2 wire connectors together to make the ecu think its in park in order to start the car and fuel pump. Can anyone clarify what to do with these connectors? Thanks again everyone?

This gearbox is so fun. The problem is freeways. Short gear + Invidia N1 catless = not a date friendly car.

Also, I go on the highway a lot while driving about 65 mph. I don't know how fast my engine would wear with short gears.

When you are done, let us know RPMs for 65, 70, & 80 if you would please.
This is something I'm considering sometime down the road if/when I kill my current one and I'm at 3500rpm at 78 mph currently. If I could get a 4.44 that would give me a boost in the first couple gears for acceleration, but still have a similar rpm for highway; that would be perfect.

working on the swap now. ran into a few issues with worn bushings that are riveted in but I will definitely let you know when it's all done.

quick question: anybody know if the tranny harness plug(harness FROM the 5spd sensors TO engine harness plug) is the same on these transmissions as the wrx's?

I dont want to cut off the plug on this tranny to splice it to the auto harness plug off my engine harness when Im going to be doing a motor swap eventually and will need that plug. I was thinking going to a junkyard and cutting the engine harness side plug off a wrecked wrx and using that for making an adapter between auto harness and manual harness and that way when I do my swap I can just remove it and use the normal manual harness.

So i figured it out. Trannys in. Everything works but there is a slight whining noise as the rpm's get higher. Doesnt matter what gear. Almost sounds like its in reverse but not that loud. Is this common for these jdm sti 5spds?

Also just to clarify, at 70mph im at about 2700 rpm. Stock wheels and tires.

Edit: I was wrong about the speed. I gauged my speed off my wifes speedo since my speedo was not hooked up. maybe hers is off. idk. I used gps to gauge my speed and at 3k rpm im at 65mph and at 4k rpm Im at 75mph.

so got my ej205 swap done. speedo still did not work. swapped in my buddy's "working" VSS. mine still didnt work. weird thing is when we put it back in his car, now HIS speedo and odom dont work. if the metal tab comes out of the vss, is it toast? we cant get his to work again no matter what we do. any ideas what could of happend? the dealer said the sensors are NOT one time use and there should be no reason it doesnt work if it was just working.
