Car only starts after pumping the clutch

Hey everyone, I've got a '99' 2.5 RS. I think it's having a starter issue but I wanted to see if anyone else thought the symptoms were for something else.

Basically what happens is, I go to start it the dash lights come on and i hear the fuel pump but it just doesn't start. If i leave the Key in the RUN position and put the clutch in and out a few times it will start.

I'm figuring it's either the Starter or a Clutch position sensor. I'm not sold on it being the clutch position sensor though b/c my understanding is that they are located on the Tranny and if you were to roll the car back and forth you would be able to start the car. (I had a similar problem in a Honda i owned)

Before I run out buying parts I wanted to see if anyone else agreed that it was likely the starter or could possibly name some other causes.

Thanks :)

There is no clutch or starter position sensor. Maybe it could be the neutral switch, but doubtful. If you disengage(push clutch pedal to floor)the clutch it will enable the starter to turn. Pumping the clutch pedal should not have anything to do with it. Maybe your floor mat is all bunched up under the clutch pedal, and not allowing a full stroke all the time? Good luck.

Thanks guys.

When i say clutch position sensor I meant neutral switch. I tend to use them interchangeably even though I shouldn't.

I'm going to go and check the switch out later and hopefully I can clean it up a little and save it.

Just to clarify - there is a difference between the clutch switch and neutral switch.

They are 2 separate parts. Neutral switch is on the transmission (by the reverse switch). Clutch switch is on the clutch pedal linkage.

Neutral switch has no influence on whether the car will start, it just tells the ECU if you're in gear or not so that the ECU can better control the engine (adjust IAC duty cycles).

A bad clutch switch will not let the car start.

I'd put money on the clutch switch. There's a DIY tip to bypass it on the forums here from someone who had the same problem (His wouldn't start at all), if you do that and it starts every time, it's definitely the switch. Just don't crank it in gear with the clutch out
