INDEX: THE BEGINNING - My RS | UPGRADE! - RSTi | MOD LIST | 2011 UPDATES | 2012 UPDATES

I am finally making one of these! Where to begin? How about the beginning!

I picked up my first RS in 2009 with the assumption that it would be a Daily Driver I did not want to mod... so much for that!

My "fun car" was a 1997 Mitsubishi VR-4 (which I sold 11/11 ;)) that I never drove in the winter, so I needed a DD.

Image

My previous DD was a 96 Jeep Cherokee, which I liked, but almost never used the cargo space and really I just grew tired of it and hated
the terrible gas mileage, plus it had tranny issues. A friend of mine had bought an RS and I remembered how much I liked the car, so I
started searching for one.

I eventually found one on eBay in California, and after a somewhat lengthy hassle from the seller there, the car was in my possession.

Here are pics from the eBay auction. Clean car, sort of high miles.

Unfortunately, the car's paint wasn't as nice as the auction's pictures led me to believe. Lots of little pits and chips, but oh well it was too
late now. I drove the car home from the shipping company's lot that day without issue.

I installed the stereo from my Jeep and had a remote start put in, and that was pretty much the extent of my mods. Oh, I also had
WRX front brakes and a full exhaust in a trade where someone was putting their car back to stock after a crash.

After owning the car for 3000 miles or so, it died in a parking lot while I was driving 5-10 mph. Had it towed home and
eventually found out it was a broken timing belt

The local Subaru dealership wanted thousands of dollars to fix it and I certainly didn't have thousands of dollars available. So, I bookmarked
the DIYs and how-to's and a friend and I did the timing belt ourselves. We also took off one of the heads to have it rebuilt and some valves
replaced (misfire codes told us what side to go to). A week later we put it all back together and the car ran great again!

Total spent: $600, not $4000.

Soon after I realized I loved the car, but it was too damn slow. I needed boost. I tried to avoid it, telling myself I had the VR-4 if I wanted
to drive fast, but it didn't work. I wanted a swapped RS.

I put mine up for sale and at about the same time found one I wanted. Mine had no serious buyers and the car I really wanted was sold to
someone else. I should have given up, but instead looked even harder.

Then, in February of 2010, I found an amazing swapped car in California. This thing had everything. A US STi motor, a sweet interior, lots of suspension work,
the miles were low and it was clean.
All it needed was a 6 speed (luckily for me the 5spd broke while he still had it, so the price came down).

I locked in a pretty sweet deal with someone on here for a complete 6SPD swap (tranny, diff, axles, drive shaft, hubs, DCCD, everything!)

Continued in 2nd post :)

Upgrade!

INDEX: THE BEGINNING - My RS | UPGRADE! - RSTi | MOD LIST | 2011 UPDATES | 2012 UPDATES

I literally sold my old RS and bought this one at the same time. When I got the check from my buyer, I sent a new one off to California and the deals were done!

Here are pics of the RSTi from the FS Thread:

It took a little while to get the car delivered (huge pain in the ass having truckers bid on your move, btw. I got calls and emails for months after the car was in my possession)
but in March of 2010 I got the call from the truck driver that he was at the end of my street. At this point, I already had the 6SPD parts in my garage ready to go in, so the first
week I had the car, I just checked it out, and reinstalled the same stereo from my old RS into this one (this setup has seen 3 cars now). I took the car to DS1 on a Wednesday
and picked it up the following Saturday, on my way to a St. Patrick's party. The car drove great! The STI 6 speed had much much shorter gears than I was expecting, but I got used to it.

Since then, I've been changing a few things here and there, removing parts I didn't like or want. I sold the P1 wheels it came with and got some MB Weapons. I changed the
brake pads and bled the fluid. I installed fender braces. I swapped out the HKS intake for a Perrin one and tidied up the engine bay. The car has an alarm and remote start again. I got real HIDs thanks
to Taiden's retrofit service and he featured me on his site. I also painted my stock wheels white for winter. Stuff like that.

Oh, and I added Cruise Control! Check out my DIY, here.

I am in the process of installing some Defi gauges, which have replaced the stock 3-gauge pack and the Genome boost gauge I had. I decided to dremel out the stock hood
instead of spend $100 for one that was not gonna fit right. I'm just waiting on a few parts to get the sensors installed.

So that's it for now. If I think of anything I forgot I'll add it, but after this post will be my progress on the car after this point

what'd u buy the car for if you don't mind me asking? i know it's always been a hard decision for me, swapping my own car (sentimental value :') ) or just buying one already stocked with all the goods (logical)..

#15 ·
Ha, let's just say including the price of the car, the trans swap, and the things I've added (and minus the things I've sold) I'm at about $20k.

The highest mileage part is probably the trans, which has about 67k on it now, with the chassis close behind at 64k. The motor has less than half that.

#19 ·
Couple updates... I installed the SPT Intake shield last week (super tight fit, and had to take out my catch can :() and sent my JDM cluster off to have the mileage adjusted to match the car's.

Once I get it back I'll snap some pics. Also hoping to get a tune in the next couple of weeks. Gonna go with an Open Source tune and sell my Access Port.

#20 ·
You having Andy tune it? Do you take the thing out of state much? The biggest thing keeping me from Open Source right now is traveling to the surrounding states that aren't blessed with 93 octane.

#21 ·
Hmm I hadn't thought of that, but the only places I can think of that have 91 octane and I might go are Iowa and Wisconsin. I will have to ask him what he does about those situations. I imagine he can make a lower power version of the same tune for 91.

#22 ·
Yeah, I've been all over the Midwest and I can say for certain that Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Colorado, Indiana, Missouri, and Arkansas are all 91 octane. It is Andy that's tuning it, right? Please let me know what he says and charges for the two tunes :)

And I'm guessing you've got an STI V6 cluster with DCCD in your car now? Jealousy.
