So my car (1999 RS w/MAF) was having issues idling, so i checked every part of the intake system (its stock right now).

What I found was a cut-out panel filter inside the large airbox (the diamond one just before the intake manifold) It had all the elements removed so was basically just a big square gasket.

My questions is: What is supposed to be in here? A panel filter or a gasket?

due to the air filter having to be before the MAF sensor

haha! the airbox setup on 99s is weird. i have a 99 forester

In my car (98RS also MAF) the filter is in the lower box; the one on the passenger side of engine bay, close to the front. The upper "box" by the throttle body in the 98's is not able to be opened.

Ok, so it looks like the 99's had the open-able type, but used the gasket.

I guess it wouldn't make sense to have two filters.

Dav3: Any idea of a part number or cost?
