Weird Starter Problems

343 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  bue car
Just finishing an 05 rhd rsti swap and put the starter in today. It only cranks the starter when not touching the motor, or a ground. When I have it bolted in correctly it just clicks as if the battery or starter are bad. (Brand new starter, battery reads 12.5v)
So I shoved a piece of cardboard between the bell housing and starter and I hear it spinning freely but the motor isn’t with it.
Kind of a headache if anyone has any insight let me know.
It’s a brand new 5 speed starter on a 6 speed transmission. I read they were compatible, I gave another starter a shot and it did the same thing.
Thanks.

What clutch did you use? I think the wrx starter needs a matching flywheel.

I used a 6 speed clutch and flywheel. I looked and the starter says it’s for a 2.5 manual Subaru. It’s from eBay.. doesn’t specify 5 or 6 speed
Is the car grounded correctly? From what you described it seems like there isn't enough power going to the starter under load

This car wasn’t running for the last 2 previous owners. I put my own drivetrain in. It does have 2 extra ground wires that were added to the starter/ battery wiring. So I’m assuming this was an issue before.
Only weird wiring I saw besides for stuff I fixed was in the bulkhead behind the dash there are a couple small grounds leading to nothing. Cant tell if it’s factory

Update I am a dumbass. I appreciate your efforts to help it did stir my mind. I painted the trans and engine while they were out, including the starter mating surface…
it works now but the starter needs to get angle grinded, there’s 2 types of 5 speed starters apparently and this one is banging into the 6 speed clutch
