Race Car.

So I picked this car up for $400 'Running'. Couldn't handle WOT. Would die if not jump started...
I drove it home... Jesus. I still can't believe that...because

Control Arms were bent

And the struts were not in their tophats...

Whatever...

So I had to the car at someone's place because they wouldn't let me keep it at my apartments...

But it needed quick work first...

I put some old Legacy 15" wheels on it.
Put Version 7 STi (GDB) struts I had lying around
Which required me to convert the drums to discs (I just put the output shaft into an AWD knuckle and left it be)
Put in new controls arms.
Rechased the threads for front suspension
Installed (well more like cleanly placed) a V3 STi cluster with MPH mod
and flocked the dash..

To put me somewhere at peace around this...

OK..

So the car sits for like almost 2 years at his place ... starts up with battery... woo hoo! So I take it to leave it at my dad's office because I have to make room for it at my new house because..

I got a FREE PARTS CAR (99 RS Coupe) ! Woo!

The Parts Car

Hell. Absolute Hell.... Being free was hardly a justifiable reason to pick this car up...

Had I made a mistake? Was the car and parts too far gone from being exposed to the elements?

The engine, I could not even take apart... it was too badly rusted. PB blaster... oils.. heat... extractors... nothing was enough... Everything literally turned to powder...

Well the drivetrain my survive... The diff hardware powdered though:facepalm:

Some blown no-name coils

Was there anything redeeming to get from this car??! Then I saw something..

STi Pillow Ball trailing arms...

I followed it to then find..

Covered in grease... it had been worth it... front AND rear whiteline swaybars...
ALK
5 Spokes (nothing a little work can't fix)
and a lw power steering pulley

and the AWD drive train/ gas tank I needed for the FWD car...

I collected what I thought could be salvaged... then salvaged the frame...

I ended up making quite a bit of money off of it... in salvage and in parts I wouldn't need to buy...

Restoration

So then I started off on restoring the RS parts I plan to use...

Nothing a little blasting and powder couldn't fix!
and a few new ebay parts!

Group N front control arm bushings (ALK may not be worth it)
SS Brake Lines
OBX rear lateral links and trailing arms (STi ones may go on my daily)
Whiteline steering rack bushings
and some misc maintenance items for the 1.8L until I can rebuild a cam'd 2.5 when I get on break in a few weeks.

and of course new OEM hardware!

Traded the 4.11 and got me a Fozzy Turbo 4.44!

To Order List

About to order Widebody kit (40mm) from the ebay and/or Version 4 front bumper.

Meanwhile I need to pick up a new alternator and battery just to get the car moving... Car doesn't turn over...

And drop off knuckles, RS calipers, intake manifolds, and valve covers to get powder coated and pick up my freshly coated sway bars!

How did you get that sti cluster in? I have one and it doesn't seem to be plug and play.
I'll let you know when I attempt to wire it up. (It's just sitting in there right now.) Don't know if 1.8 is staying in or swapping for 2.5 harness yet.

Are you having trouble with the plugs themselves, or not getting any feedback once plugged in? Speed cable should just plug in?

If I recall correctly the sti had a blue plug the old cluster didnt and that was the only plug I couldn't figure out. The old cluster has a small white plug that may be for the same thing? But anyways everything else plugged right in but the cluster only lit up a few indicators.

Sick of rust...

looks good! keeping the carigreen?
I really want to because I never see this color, but I am not sure how to go about it cost effectively as it will be a race car...
Do I..
Do a dip color CLOSE to this?
Do I have vinyl made in the same color?
Do I just paint it white...?

Started from a location nearest the bottom...

Currently I am ascended to here... [Highlighters help you remember notes in school. This should help me remember to use anti-seize.]

Can't decide if I want to rebuild these and use these on RallyX/Rally car...
or... save them for a track only car.

OR sell them and get gravel coilovers

AST 4300's (for GD, so they need some work)

or put them on daily/autox/track car that I am still gather parts for...

Japan. It was pretty cheap.
My buddy got a trans from the same source, his ended up being out of an actual S201. His was STUPID cheap for what he got. But we both have DCCD RA trans with the front LSD ;)

So can I just go to Japan. Go to the big yellow box, and pick one up and ship it back? Is that how that works? Or are you military and get to do all of the cool things :(

Just keep an eye out on ebay, or you could visit/call one of the 20 JDM importers in Houston. You're looking for any transmission that the code has "EA" for the last two letters. There is only two of them and those are the only 4.44 DCCD WITH a helical front differential. If you don't need the front LSD there are a couple more options.
