FAQ

What are the major issues in this swap?

so far ive found:
-radiator needs to be moved forward under the crossmember, adding 2 cyl to the front of what you already had losses space.*

-power steering pump needs to be swapped with impreza unit do to clearance issues*

-wiring.

What flywheel and clutch works?
it so seems that you match the transmission, so rs works.*

What motor mounts do you use and with which crossmember?

Any EJ and n/a crossmember works

How do i get the power steering to work?

-you can use your stock L or RS pump, unsure about lines. hood needs to be modified for clearance on eg33 *

svx pump works with svx lines*

Can i make the heater and A/C work?
*

What radiator fits easily?

here is a thread that can help:

*

How much power does the ez30 or eg33 make?

230hp 224ftlbs - eg33

*

OMG SCARY WIRING

thanks jake:

Will the stock headers fit?

eg33 yes

ez30 no, you need a header, obx makes one.

Can i use the stock tachometer?

yes. with one of these.

Universal Tachometer Signal Interface

the 6 cyl signal makes the 4cyl tach go wacky without one.

any answers with the * mean that it is unverified and awating a second member approval.

H6

Im looking at doing swaping a H6 into my rs. What would be the best car to get the donor motor out of? SVX, Outback, Tribeca, or a Legacy i was leaning to the SVX just because i know where there is a few of them at junk yards. Just wanting to see if those are bad motors or if they are all pretty much the same thing? Either way its going to get a complete rebuild thanks for the advice.

SVX are the most available, perhaps. But the newer engines are obviously going to be easier to find parts and support for.

BUT!! My question is why? I only know of two H6 swaps. Power can be made far cheaper via a turbo kit or EJ20 swap.

if getting a newer motor is just because of the were and tear it will be getting a full rebuild befor going in. Yes i am alittle mechanically inclined and i have alot of friends that are alot more knowledgeable than i am. Ive done a few swaps already and some engine building so that not really a prob and im looking at doing this swap just because not alot of ppl have done it if theres only 2 ppl out there that have done it im looking to be lucky # 3 =b and im more of a 6 cyl fan over 4 cyl im building a RB25 and a 2JZ right now so im just trying to keep it in the 6's you know

The mechanical part is fairly easy, if you've got experience w/ rebuilds and what not. The headache comes in when you try to merge harnesses. Reading pages and pages of electrical schematics isn't for the faint of heart. You could be chasing down gremlins after you've wired it up...for months!

Are the RB and 2JZ N/A?

the RB has a single turbo a turbonetics some other little bolt ons and the 2JZ was N/A but its going twin GT30R that one im fully building as far as wiring goes thats all black magic to me =/ but one of my friends said he would do it so thats not a prob we got the RB wired into my z with out too many probs. Famous last words i know lol =b

I assume there is no way to use a standard 4 cylinder ECU so can one not just un-wire the ECU, sensors and whatever else not from an SVX and slap it in a GC?

get an EG33. 250hp NA. a bunch of aftermarket support (check out ECUTune), far more than the EZ motors. wiring isn't too bad if you know what you're doing (almost all are OBD I), and if you don't, paying to have it done is cheap too.

couple GC swaps I've done:

(click for more info and video of this one)

I'm also working on a '96 legacy wagon and a '98 LGT here in Duluth that will be getting EG33s next summer.

as I've said, the EG33 is the most underrated motor subaru has ever made. EJ22t? Bah, JUNK by comparison. not to mention overpriced. if the 250hp isn't enough, drop 22t pistons in there to lower the compression, and boost it.

and the potential. 320 awhp. still N/A:

the eg33 came out of any svx. another big problem for the swap is the radiator. you have to move it forward into the frame.
i have been doing research for a while and want to do it, i just don't have the money for it or a daily driver.
good luck. (i wanted to be #3...guess not now maybe #4)

My car is the second in numbchux list. It's not so bad with the radiator, not really at all. And chux did the whole wiring in a weekend. The car isn't on the road because I'm re-plumbing the brakes to allow for a proportioning valve and hydro e-brake. I feel that the coilovers I put on with heavy springs, + the closer to 50-50 braking via proportioning valve will compensate for the excess weight in front of the wheels.

H6 are definitely cool , but to be honest, unless you know your way around subaru engines/engine bays really well and are looking for a somewhat original project i would just wrx swap it.....it's a hell of a lot easier for the same power....

granted the powerband of the H6 is pretty legit...but i wouldn't consider it a plug and play swap that can be done in a weekend like a wrx swap....there will be quite a bit of fabbing and hacking...
