Hello RS25 members, thanks for checking out my members journal! Well it's been two years since I've joined this forum and think a members journal is long past due. Here's my 2001 2.5RS GM6 which I had bought myself at 17 two years ago. This is my first car, but I don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon. It's a shame I had to learn my lessons the hard way with this car, but the point is that I've learned.

When I bought the car for $6,000, the previous owner had already installed Borla replica headers and cat-back exhaust and the Cobb cold air intake along with the clear lenses on the front half of the car. It came from the factory back in 2001, with the leather/vinyl seats, gauge pod with vacuum/battery voltage/oil temp. and the Subaru carbon fiber center console trim. Everything else was me, some good and lots bad :(. As soon as I return home to Illinois after graduating from Wyotech I plan on having the passenger rocker panel, door, fender and windshield fixed or replaced. New wheels and tires are also in great consideration to just bring her back to her original state. I want to start a project engine also when I get back, which will either be a twin-charged EJ257, Cummins 24-valve p-pump conversion (I'm a diesel student:lol:) or a Chevy big block. Regardless which one I decided on or can afford, an EJ257 build WILL happen sometime in the future along with a full 22B exterior conversion.

2.5" exhaust build

Last weekend I had fab'd up a 2.5" exhaust from the Borla replicas all as one piece. The original exhaust had bad cats in it, and after buying a newer cat section that I didn't pay attention to the description I installed a stock gutted cat and cracked the mid-pipe donut gasket seat tightening the flange together. This new exhaust is mandrel bent and straight tubing from Jegs.com and Summitracing.com with a Magnaflow metal substrate cat on it. I didn't originally buy a muffler for it which was a huge mistake haha! If anyone has ever heard a straight piped N/A 2.5, then they will agree it is VERY loud. After 2,000 RPM's it sounds like a Harley, and it is very annoying. Just bought a Cherry Bomb Pro muffler to put on for the ride home to Illinois. I tried a test on the car and just squeezed the muffler onto the back the other day to hear it. It quiets it down a LOT, but there's still a lot of that cackling noise I had before. Now it sounds like metal pieces being shaken around in a metal tub after 2,000 RPM's but not as loud as before.

I'll also be getting a lightly used bank 1 o2 sensor in the mail sometime this week from a member on this site.

The welds were done with a Craftsman 110V welder and flux coated .035" wire. The work was done at my roommates house where he has a heated garage to work on his stuff. First time with flux wire, conclusion: I don't like flux wire, but it gets the job done.










I stopped taking fitment pictures after this, I was too concentrated on getting it finished before I had to drive back to Laramie.

Did a quick rattle can paint job with black 1500F paint


Here is a couple of pictures of the rear with is installed. I used some steel stakes that my roommate had at his shop to make the hangers haha! Since this exhaust might only last a year or two, I didn't really care how "nice" it was done, but for my very first welding job besides all the practice lap welds I did at class, I think it came out pretty nice.


It sits really low but have not had any problems bottoming out anywhere, especially with these really crowned roads here in Laramie.

I had fun with the build and I also notice that the car keeps pulling past 4,000 RPM's which before it started to slow down in the higher range. That might change after I install the muffler, but we'll see. I bought one of those OBD II to USB plugs from that DIY on how to road dyno your car. I'll post rough dyno results as soon as I get the cable in from China haha!

I slid into one of those yellow concrete posts around handi-cap spots the first one. Second, went too fast up a hill on a dirt road with an immediate turn at the top and the third was at Deer Trail and I didn't know what I was doing and I should have waited for someone to walk me through the Rally X course. I wandered onto the Desert X track and found my way into a hole that smashed my front end in.

The point is that I feel like I'm a ton more careful driving. I don't plan on using it for Rally X at all. I just want to get it back to normal and work my way through mods from there. I fucked up enough and I don't want to do it anymore.

Note to self and everyone else on this forum: Cherry Bomb's = bad sound. I should just stick a civic logo on the back to make it complete =(. At least the deafening noise is gone.

We'll have to see. I'm not sure I'll want to deal with all the shit I will most likely receive for killing my car.

I think you've got this meet confused for the NASIOC meets in Algonquin. Way different crowd.

Regarding the exhaust, why not pick up a cheap WRX or STI axleback and throw it on?

thats what i should have done but i thought 2.5 would be nice to go with the N/A performance i had planned on doing. when i get more into the money im gonna have to experiment with mufflers and resonators, but i DO feel more pull in the top end which is cool lol. it just keeps going now instead of loosing it near 5k.

well whats done is done.

im just going to get it back to DD status and not do too many stupid things with it anymore. if i come across a good deal on an engine swap than that will surely happen, but im not gonna go all out race car like i had planned on.

i might start another project, something i dont have to spend TONS of money on and it probably wont be Subaru.

got my A/F ratio sensor thanks to Micro2! installing it tomorrow for the ride home from Denver to Illinois on monday

CEL went back on 4 hours into the trip back home. spun off I-80 doing 80 mph in the slush trying to keep up with my dad, no immediate damage. next day, 3 hours from home the rear driver side wheel bearing went out to the point that it felt like the wheel was riding on little pebbles instead of a bearing at 10 mph. car is 3 hours away being fixed for $600 parts and labor in Iowa City...

yea, were going to pick it up on saturday. i should have my check from NOS Energy Drinks from the custom xbox 360 i built for them on friday and then i'll be able to pay my parents back, get new struts and start my hunt for new body parts and get the rocker panel repaired. i would also love to buy some new wheels, and a 12 gauge shotgun =)
