-=PREVIOUS CARS=-

Hey everyone! My name's Carl and I've been a Subaru owner ever since day 1 of driving, and I'm sure I'll always own at least one Subaru my whole life. I love these cars!

I've always wanted a 2.5RS from the get go, but they were all salvage titled back when I was shopping for my first car in 2004. My parents wanted me to get a Honda, but I was able to talk them into letting me get a Subaru - AWD is safe amirite?! I was a fortunate high school kid. My parents bought me a 4eat (sadtimes) 02 WRB WRX at the start of my senior year as a present. I knew how fortunate I was, so I took very good care of it. It was after all, the most expensive possession I had... still is, haha. Modded it very very slowly. After 7 years or so I finally had her looking how I wanted.

Michelle had very many styles, but here was he latest:

Throughout the years of owning her, I always complained about driving an automatic car. As much as I wanted a manual from the start my parents wouldn't allow it since they figured that I would leave the car at home, so they can drive it, when I went to college. Nothing became of that since I always had the car with me.

Ideally, I wanted an RS for the lower car insurance rate, better gas mileage, cheaper gas, and ultimately because I've always wanted one. So, once I bought the RS, I'd have to sell my beloved Michelle.

At the end of this summer I decided that I would part out my WRX in hopes to make enough money for a 2.5RS. I made about $4800 parting mostly everything out. I kept a few items that I wanted to transfer over to the RS. I had money saved up as well, since I'd have to pay California prices for the car -_-

Spent a good month scouring CL, Nasioc, i-club, and here every day for an RS to buy. While parting out my car I found about four great prospects, but since I didn't have all the money there was nothing I could do. After seeing three RS' in horrible shape and for at least $6500 minimum, I started to lose hope. I knew that finding "the right car" would take time, but I was impatient. I was sooo close, yet so far. Luckily for me, one Saturday, I decided to check CL and low and behold, a clean looking RS appeared. I immediately called the guy and set up a meet for the following morning. Like all the rest, I was STOKED! I didn't get too excited since the track record wasn't so hot.

Met the guy on Sunday, Nov 13th, in the morning and checked out the car. The seller turned out to be a previous Subaru mechanic and is now a Service writer. In my head I was ecstatic; Some one who actually knew how to maintain a car! He told me that he just rebuilt the engine because the previous owner's radiator hose popped and he continued to run the engine, eventually over heating it. Since he rebuilt the motor, he installed new head gaskets, timing belt, PS pump, everything, and clutch. Since he worked at Subaru he got all parts at cost, so why not go with OEM stuff.

The car checked out visually, and through CarFax. The guy I bought it from owned it for a total of three weeks. He pretty much flipped the car since he had the mechanical know how. I ended up paying a great price for it - well below everyone else's price, and in the best mechanical shape I'd say. Win win, I was going to buy it! I would be the third owner. Best part is that the original owner bought the car from Springfield, Illinois and brought it to California. I'm from Naperville, Illinois, so this was the icing on the cake.

My friend had to drive it home for me since I haven't really driven manual that much. Only parked a couple friend's Civics, Evo's, STi's, etc down the street. We drove slow since I didn't have insurance on her yet, but we made it home.

May I introduce, Melanie!

My only gripe is that, since he worked at a Subaru dealership, he had the guys there detail the car. She could use a real detail job as there's a lot of swirl marks from the "work" that the porter's did. As evident in the pictures :barf:

I have a list of parts that I want to buy after I sell off my WRX, so I'll update it time goes on. I won't have a super exciting build, but I wanted to document my 'build' since I didn't do so for my WRX. Maybe after a few years, this will get exciting when I can afford an STi swap, haha.

I plan on buying coilovers, wheels, full exhaust, and JDM tails once my WRX sells. The rest I'll save as emergency money. Even though the car looks great, you never know when buying a used car. But I'll hope for the best *knock on wood.

Thanks! I can't wait to sell my WRX - it'll be bitter sweet really. But, I can't wait to get coilovers and wheels for the RS.

Nice! Now sell me that wingless trunk for my SRP lol
I've been thinking of selling the wingless. I just love the look of the coupe wing, and my WRX was wingless for 90% of me owning her. The wing holes were welded and repainted :D

On a side note: Got the Recaros in. I have them mounted on Sparco mounts with a 1 inch spacer to bring the overall height back to WRX seat specs. I'm in a pickle though. The RS seats do sit lower then stock WRX seats, but since these are buckets, I still sit a tad bit lower then the RS seats. I'm not sure if I should leave it as is, or completely remove the spacers and sit loooooooow. My friend's say I sit "high" when they look through the door, so maybe I'll take out the spacer this weekend and try it out.

My friend's HATE the Recaro's in the RS. In order to adjust the back, you need to turn a knob, so it's not easy getting into the back seat, haha.

Should be swapping my Cusco sway bar and Perrin endlinks from the WRX to the RS this coming weekend as well. Would've had it done with the seat swap, but I forgot to buy new sway bar bushings x.x Also have to clean up the WRX some more to get her ready to sell :(

#7 ·
I'm loving every second of it!

-----

Lowered the seats this weekend, and it feels a whole lot better!

Also, ran into trouble with the alarm system. The seller lost the remote, so after I disconnected the battery (tried installing my STi steering wheel), the alarm disabled the car. :( Ended up disconnecting the alarm all together. I'll wait until my WRX sells to buy a Clifford. STi wheel will go in once I find an 02/03 airbag charge to use - when people reply to my PMs in their part out threads, haha. Hopefully it'll be soon because I love the feel of that steering wheel.

Oh yah, Crystal ambers = teh s3x

Picked up some Borla Reps from a friend a week ago, and started working on it last weekend. In hopes of avoiding a CEL, I am going to spray the headers with VHT header paint, wrap it with DEI titanium wrap, then coat it with DEI silicone spray on top. Probably over doing it, but I'm bored and it's a fun little project.

Some of the materials:

I have no idea how people get away with using 1-1.5 rolls - I had to use 3 o_O

I wasn't too happy with 3 spot welds on the outside of the flanges, so I had a friend of mine weld it up. I'd say he did a great job!

A little scotch brite and some elbow grease:

Painting:

Finished wrapping:

I will have to finish the silicone coating on Friday as it'll be my first free day this week.

Can't wait to get the boxer rumble back!

Also...

Sold my WRX three weeks ago. I'm surprised as well because it only took me three days, and one potential buyer to sell it. I got close to KBB, and my asking price, so I was happy. Hopefully he is as well!

Ordered some parts and the big ticket items arrived in the mail over the past few days. With my WRX, I bought all my upgrades months after each other, so having a small "parts pile" is pretty exciting :D

JDM FHI Carbon Fiber front strut bar, and Cusco rear Carbon Fiber strut bar. Thanks Michael! I LOVE Cusco, and their rear strut bar is seksi. Apparently it's pretty rare as well, yes/no?

New Stromung dual tip catback from boxer4racing!

ISC N1 coilovers with thrust bearings from AWJ Performance. It was a pleasure working with them, always answered any questions quick and promptly, zero complainst!

I have more parts coming in the mail, so the next few weekends will be busy, hehe :rotflmao:

I plan on tackling the, front lip, coilovers, and strut bars this Friday. As well as putting in better ballasts and bulbs in my retrofits that I bought/traded for. I'll post pictures when I'm happy with the light output, as of now - it sucks x.x

#13 · (Edited)
As planned, I was able to get some wrench time on my car this Friday.

Installed the lip first, which was simple and quick.

Installed Matsushita GenV ballasts, and Philips 85122+ bulbs. The light output is 1000x better then the cheap ebay stuff that it originally had.

It wasn't my first rodeo, so the coilovers went in rather easily. It has been about 7 years since I last played around with ride height, so that took me a lot longer then the actual install, haha. Two complaints about the ISC coilovers - (a) there's no mounting tab for the front abs line and (b) the rear brake line bracket is at an awkward angle. Other then that, the ride is excellent. I had Cusco Zero 2Rs on my old WRX, which were their track version, so this time I opted for the Street Sport.

I haven't dialed in the ride height yet, seeing as it should settle a little more. It's drive-able and ready for my trip to see family for Christmas tomorrow.

Stock Height:

ISC coilovers:

-Slammed front because I had no idea which "height" to set it at, and stock rear. It was getting dark so I left it alone lol

-Height semi adjusted - raked forward a little bit, but I hope the rear will settle nicely:

Here's the rear Cusco carbon fiber strut bar:

Retros:

That's it for this weekend. Hopefully I'll get the Borla Reps and Stromung on my car next weekend!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

#16 ·
I bought the Stromung HFC that was on iclub, so I won't have any CEL issues. Deciding if I should just go track pipe though....hmm....

I might also consider selling the retros in the future haha. I want some FXR bixenons so I can have high beams again.

#20 ·
The ISC's are great! Definitely more comfortable then my Cusco Zero 2R's I had on my WRX. I might have to contact AJW though. I tried to adjust the dampening on my struts, and the driver's side rear doesn't "click" when I adjust it. Other then that, I'll have to wait for my wheels before I lower the car some more.

Track pipe will make your shit drone. So what, those headlights don't have high beams?? Wtf??
Nope, no high beams. TSX projectors are just the low beams. You need BiXenon for both high and low beams, hence the FXRs. I never really used my high beams with the HIDs, the cutoff and light output is just toooooo good to need highs.

Nice to see another SRP, though it was going to be a dying color

I like all your mods so far
Thanks! I can't say that it was my first choice, as if I had one lol. It's growing on me though. It's tough to decide what color wheels to get get - I'm not a fan of black. Gold is great, but played out. I'd like white, but I've seen mixed outcomes when it comes to white on SRP.

----------------

I have a few more things to work on this weekend, and hopefully I'll be able to get some updated photos. Once I get wheels, Melanie will sit as she is for awhile - spent enough to get her how I'd like her to be.

I'm trying to find some wheels but the options are limited right now. Ideally, I'd like some 17x8 +38 Volk TE/LE37s, but those are a dime a dozen, and I cannot justify spending $3k for them new.

Some options include:
-gold Advan RCII 17x8.5 +45
-silver Advan TCII 17x8.5 +45
-silver/powdercoated white RPF1 17x8 +45

I've never seen people run the TCII on RS' so I'm contemplating getting those because of that. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the hollow spokes though. I'm not afraid they'll break, but I don't want water to accumulate in the crevices causing possible problems. And yes, I realize that once I drive the said water will fall out... eh.

#23 · (Edited)
I agree, it's definitely growing on me! The only down side is having to repaint any exterior parts since SRP is pretty rare.

------------------------

Didn't update the thread last week cause of New Years, but I was able to get some work done on Melanie.

I was excited to finally get the boxer rumble back. My wrapped and paint Borla Reps were dry, a Stromung HFC that I bought Friday in the afternoon showed up Saturday morning, and I could finally unwrap the Stromung dual tip. Also, picked up a set of Grimmspeed gaskets to go along.

Things were great for the first week. Unfortunately, last night I pulled a CEL. I'm hoping it's due to the headers/HFC, but I figured it shouldn't go off since I still have a cat. Do I need the spark plug anti fowler for my o2 sensor with the HFC? I'll borrow my friend's scanner tomorrow and hopefully it's just the o2 code and nothing else.

12/26/11

It sucked trying to find stuff in the trunk at night so I bought a trunk light kit.

Installed some LED map, and dome lights. I have one for the trunk as well, but it's too long and doesn't fit inside the housing. I'm considering drilling a hole just so I can use it though...

Also, my girlfriend wanted to help me work on my car, so I had her install some yellow fog light film. Turned out nice. I should have bought some LaminX film instead of the cheap ebay stuff. I had LaminX on my WRX and it was a much thicker film which made install much easier. My girl was happy to help and I told her that she should help me more often - gonna put her to work hehe.

I'll update with some pics later.

Earlier today's TO-DO list:

-install STi diffuser with Cusco bar *CHECK
-install rear JDM spats *CHECK

I had an OEM rear diffuser on my 02 WRX, and I loved the look. Right away I knew that I wanted the STi rear diffuser for the RS since there's no center section, just spats. I've been eyeing cod3suby's Cusco kit, couldn't justify buying it. A friend of mine visits him often, so I just said f*ck it, and had my friend pick it up for me.

It was a simple install which for some reason took me awhile to do. I spent most of my time trying to get a sway bar mount bolt out because the gas filler neck was in the way. I had three bolts out in seconds, and spent 10 mins on said bolt, turning it 1/8 of a turn a time.

Next up were the JDM rear spats. I didn't think they'd turn out that well since everyone knows that they do not fit the USDM bumper that well. Some how I managed to get them to turn out nicely - I think. I used four mounting positions - the front screw, a zip tie, 1/4 bolt and nut, and some stitched zip ties =)

Today was fun!

I spoke several times about wanting to buy a pressure washer so I can snow foam my car, and low and behold, my girlfriend bought me one for Christmas. Since then I've been waiting for my foam lance to show up and it did this week. Waited till my girl could watch me use it for the first time, and she wanted me to wash her car as well. lol

THIS THING IS SO FUN!

Dirty:

Foamed (still have to find out the best ratio):

Washed by hand after the foam, and dried up AKA CLEAN!:

#28 ·
DO ETTTT! I sold mine since my WRX was auto and because I know that I'll do an STi swap sometime in the future. I've always loved the GC bodystyle and with the plethora of [idiot, not all though] people crashing their STi's, a transplant isn't too hard to find :rotflmao:

Nice, even I dont have a pressure washer........yet. But thats great Ill use yours when we do your car.

Looks fun!
It was, I want a new gun though. I want a quick disconnect like air tools have. Gotta do more shopping.

And GEEZ, my paint definitely needs some lovin' That last picture is making me cringe now that I look at it again.

#30 · (Edited)
Well, after 3 weeks, my JDM tail lights finally showed up. Found the time to get them installed, and I love how it completes the rear end. Now only if I could find an RS wing... All in all the swap was straight forward. I just hope that I put enough sealant so that there's no water leaks in my trunk. Something I'll find out in the future I guess....

Brand New!!!!

Half way there...

mMMmmm, seksi!

#31 ·
want your stromung soooo bad. do an exhaust vid and post it please.... everything you are doing, i have done to my car or want to do to mine! get a coupe wing you wont regret it. keep up the good work. is a swap in the future? and how much did the coilovers run? im looking at those after taxes :D

ps hit the little orange corner things with black and it makes the front end look even more aggressive!!

#32 · (Edited)
Thanks!

I'll try to get a video of the exhaust set up. Mine sounds raspy though. I'm not used it it but a friend said that all NAs will have that, my WRX wasn't so bad. I don't have a good camera or microphone to record it so I fear that the quality will suck. Best thing I have is my cell phone lol. I have an old school first gen iPod, so I may replace it with an iPod Touch. If I do that then I can get a decent video up...I can't decide if I should replace it or not.

Picked up the coilovers from Andrew @ AJW during their Christmas sale, so it was $895 shipped. Not bad for brand new coilovers, and they haven't given me any troubles yet.

As for the front end...I have a set of fog light covers that I need to put on. I also have some 22b Replica vents too hehe. Waiting for my paint to show up this coming week, so I'll be spraying it all on the weekend. The fog light covers will clean up the front end. I think the front is too 'busy' with the yellow overlays ~ too many colors.

I'm waiting for a good deal on some wheels and I'll be done with the car for awhile; or so I think. A swap will be in the future....but that's in 5-6 years lol.
