Hi, I recently bought a 1993 impreza L fwd. I took the car to a mechanic to find if anything is wrong because there was a slight oil leak. Not sure where it is and its not a big leak as nothing hits the ground. It seems it is leaking on the exhaust and producing a lovely smell. Anyway, it seems the mechanic says the cam or crank shaft seals need replacing (not sure which because I cant really understand him) as well as the timing belt tensioner. He quoted $500. Is this around the average price? Also, he's not a subaru specialist. Would I be better off taking the car to an independent subaru mechanic? Thanks in advance.

uhm well id think most likely the crank seal? but id say take it to a subaru specialist...because when my motor got fucked up my mechanic told me i had a dead cylinder and a spun rod bearing...and it turned out to be just plugs wires and seals, so take it to a subaru tech

If you have the space and the tools, you can do it yourself. Shouldn't take more than a day even if you take your time, like I did.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, I do not have any tools of my own and I'm a complete newb when it comes to cars. I think I'll take my car to the subaru mechanic and see what the diagnosis is from there. Also, my speedometer and odometer are also not working. Does it cost a lot to repair this?

definatly take it to a subaru specialists. Some times independent mechanics are not always right - have a better shot with a subaru specialist.
