I bought a rusty 3.90 r160 pumpkin with the Vlsd from a 90-91 turbo legacy and had to remove the outer pinion shaft nut because the diff would not turn. The problem is when i go to torque the nut back on the book calls for 123 ft lbs as a starting point. You are supposed to have recorded the turning torque of the pinion shaft before removal and replicate that same torque by tightening the nut until the pinion shaft reaches that same spec up the max nut torque of 144 ft lbs.

so since i have no pre-recorded turning torque (in inch lbs of course) should i just set the nut to ~133 ft lbs and hope the internal gear lash isn't too off?

IIRC the torque on the pinion shouldnt change the depth. It will change the preload on the pinion bearings. I swapped flanges and just used a impact gun and that was many miles ago.
