my friend said that the 99 RS engine setup was bad or something and would/may cause problems, so he suggested i should get a 00 RS cuz the setup is different and no probs.

is this true? can someone explain this to me if you know what im talking about?

any 99 RS owners out there with probs?

thanks

2 main differences

1. The 99 uses a MAF air flow sensor which is prone to going bad...but this was just recalled and I had mine changed yesterday.( I didn't ever blow a sensor so I can't really comment on the problems) supposedly from what I understand the 99 is easier to Turbo.

2. The 00 uses a mas sensor which has never had problems, probably a better set up, and the 00 has a rear LSD which is a good thing to have but keep in mind you can buy a good aftermarket LSD for $500-$1000.

Other than that they are basically the same i think.

Actually MAS is the same thing as an MAF (different acronyms for the same thing (Mass Air Flow Sensor)). The 2000-2002 2.5RS has a MAP sensor (Manifold Air Pressure) instead. WRXes have one of each.

Generally speaking, an MAF sensor is a more accurate way to measure air flow but MAP sensors are more durable and less restrictive.

Also the 98-99 2.5RS has 9.7:1 compression where the 2000+ models have 10.0:1. (Which makes the 98-99 models slightly more boost friendly.)

warp 3 is correct in that they both measure air volume and a maf is probably more accurate, but the mas is in the throttle body while the maf is a seperate unit placed somewhere in the intake track. A mas is more conveint for intakes and such, but with the recall I don't see where one has an advantage over the other. The main decision between 99 and 00 is the LSD. IMHO:biggest:

Also the 99 has the 5 spoke style wheels which are a 16x7 and the 00 has the 6 spoke style which are 16x6.5. So you can put a wider tire on the 99 wheel. If that is a concern.

Each one has its plusses and minuses. The 99 MAF is more accurate BUT it also tends to break (it was just recalled but no word yet on how duable the new sensor is). The MAP sensor is actually easier to get intakes for since you dont need any adapters. BUT the MAP sensor cars (00-01) tend to run REALLY rich. The rear LSD is a bonus but its not a racing grade diff. If you can get the $$ to upgrade you'll want to upgrade both the open and the LSD. The 00-01 got more options standard than the 98-99's. The list goes on and on. If you can find an RS and its a good price BUY IT. The nuances of each MY are fairly petty in the grand scheme of things.

Umm...no :D

98-01 2.5RS all have 16x7 wheels:
98 - gold 5 spoke
99 - silver 5 spoke
00/01 - silver 6 spoke

02WRX (USDM) and Legacy GT has 16x6.5 wheels (and thus will NOT clear the Subaru 4-piston calipers)

If i am not mistaken, the MY98 has 10.0:1 while the 99 has the 9.7:1. Correct me if I am wrong.

Well the 98 one was an assumption on my part. I do know the 99 has 9.7:1 and the 00-01 (and I assume the '02 RS) has 10.0:1.

Umm...WTH?

Actually, it stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure. Just in case anyone cares!
