Subaru OEM oil filter manufacturer defect - NASIOC

Hey forums,

So my car recently started experiencing what sounded like rod knock. I brought it into my local shop where they inspected the car. Since I had the timing belt replaced last May I was thinking maybe it was the tensioner that was going bad. They concluded the tensioner was fine and decided to pull the oil filter to look at the oil.

They used a tool to cut open the filter and this is what they found. The oil filter was missing an entire section of the pleats. This filter was installed on my car from September to now and over 3000kms of driving. Note that my car has 132,000 kms and it is a 2011 STI. I have a KillerB oil pickup and baffle, Radium Engineering AOS, new timing belt, larger STI oil pump 12mm, Cobb Turbo inlet, and Cobb stage 1 OTS Accessport.

I’m lucky that a Subaru Canada rep is coming into a local dealer and the shop working on my car is going to discuss this with the Rep and the local dealership regarding what could be done.

What would you do in my situation? Tough to say the defective oil filter didn’t cause some direct damage to my motor right? Should I be entitled to some form of compensation? I feel like Subaru should investigate this batch of oil filters and try to remove all of them from circulation.

I should note that I do need a new short block. There was quite a bit of metal fragments in my oil no thanks to my bypassed oil Filter.

I have one of these installed on my engine, I'll have to cut it open when I change the oil...

I'm a Sub specialist independent shop. Factory oil filters are junk. Try WIX, Amsoil or NAPA Platinum. I will use Napa Gold in a pinch. I will not install factory filters under any conditions.

I work at a dealer and it's all we use, obviously. The only times I've seen the anti drain valve fail is when people are 2.5k+ over their 6k interval. Duh the oil filter is going to fail with 10,000 miles of use. The ones I hate are from quick lube places, those filters are absolute dog shit. Doesn't usually matter how many miles are on it, they always fail.

Usually these come apart where the pleats are glued to the caps, not to the seam. But if thats a missing piece and not just the pleats retracting back, the floating media absolutely will clog an oil galley going to the rotating assembly, and the rod bearings will be the first to go with the loss of flow. Hopefully they help him out but seeing as his mileage is high and its a modified motor, he's probably SOL.

I use the AA130/AA031 Roki filters on my cars, nothing else. These cheap honeywell filters are junk, its been proven time and time again. These are good for filtering your parts washer or something

Also, these are cool for breaking in a new motor. Break in is maybe 200 miles or so, less if you do it properly, id change the filter out after initial warm up on the new cylinders, then 2-3 times in that break in period then normal intervals from there.
