First I own a 97 obs with a DOHC 2.2L manual 5 speed.
I am yanking the engine out to replace the slipping clutch and to rebuild my tranny as the synchros are going in 2nd from my last auto-x event.

I am going to lurk around a few local junkyards in order to see if I can locate a 2.5L DOHC motor to put back in as I understand they for the most part are plug and play with minor wiring difficulty.

My question is what to look for so that I don't get a really big paper weight. (since I am not able to start and listen to it run)
I.E. stuff that I can do in the junkyard. Like look at mileage if possible, see why it was wrecked (if hit in the back.. so on).
tear the head off and look at cylinders. valves?

Please any help will be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks, Chris.
sorry for the length...

P.S.
any ideas for a clutch I will also take.

Most reputable places will honor a 30-day warranty. If they won't, I wouldn't deal with them.

yep my 2.2L sure is a DOHC, has that lovely tippity tappidy noise on warm up.
And not to worried about the class business as I only do it a couple times a year. never been worried about points.

The 2.2 n/a is sohc. You can tell by looking at your timing belt cover, there will only be two circles. One on the left and one on the right. The dohc engines have two circles made into the cover. The tapping you are hearing may be hydraulic lash adjusters going bad. You can use the same type of clutch your 2.2 uses on the 2.5 when you get it. I have a 2.5dohc and my clutch is the stock 2.2 type. Just try to get the lowest mileage engine you can. Odds are if the car was wrecked, the engine should be ok. You may need to change some gaskets though, and definately the timing belt and water pump.

"Need help finding a good motor at a junkyard."

Pretty sure this is an oxymoron?
