So long story short... I bought my 2003 Impreza RS in 2006 with 80k on it. It now has 235k and (I'm assuming) a broken timing belt as of last Thursday. I'm an idiot for not keeping up on maintenance, I know. I absolutely love this car and I'm not sure what to do with it. That's why I'm asking my fellow RS owners advice.

I want to do something fun with it. Mostly I've been heavily researching doing a V7 EJ207 swap. Most likely from a complete JDM half cut. BUT... I need something to drive right now too.

Here are my options, from most economical/reasonable to probably a "terrible financial decision".

1. Open up the RS, fix whats broken, Keep my stock RS stock.

2. Buy the 08 2.5i from the stealership near me for 9k and park the RS until I can afford the swap. It will probably be a couple years unless I win the lottery.

C. Buy a $600 beater and $10-15k worth of JDM STi half cut and Start on the swap right away.

4. Sell the RS for parts :( and buy a WRX for too much money

What I'm looking to obtain from the swap is a stock V7 STi. I'm talking about literally transferring every piece 1 by 1 from a half cut into my empty RS husk. In the end, no matter what I do, I need a reliable DD. For the past 7 years I have depended on my RS and it never once let me down, never left me stranded, and never emptied my bank account... until now haha.

If the timing belt broke, there is potentially damage to the valves as well. I say go for the beater option.

Right, I do have a brand new clutch that i never got around to putting in and I figured if I'm pulling the engine to do work on the heads and clutch anyway why not just put something with a little more umpfff back in. Thanks for the vote.

I vote C. It will only make you love the car more......Only do it if you have the funds and time however.

Just remember that swaps don't come without problems. Even with me swapping in a WRX into my GC, i've had plenty of issues.

I say start by pulling the engine and check out what the problem really is... If you just gotta rebuild the heads and replace a few bent valves you are looking at about 350 for the machine shop work on your heads, 100 for new hg and an oil change... That is not too bad...

Option C, that's what I did. My friend lent me his spare car during the swap.
