So my 05 WRX motor just came in, but I can't start the swap process for about another week.

In the mean time, I'm probably going to go get the intake manifold powdercoated just for fun, but I was wondering what would be easy to do while the motor is out of the car that would help with reliability/power and just make it run more efficiently all around.

I'm only thinking about spending around $300-350 for right now so i can have some left in case i run into problems during the swap.

Is it tough to do? I'm down for physical labor and all that, but if its really easy to mess stuff up I would want to get it done professionally (which I believe is a little bit out of my price range)

I say up-pipe. It's cheap and super easy engine-out-of-the-car. OEM sti pipes are about $70, gaskets are another $20. Do it and you'll be glad you did. Or wait and regret it afterwards when you see how little room there is around the pipe with the engine in.
