Here's Toaster right when purchased:

Unfortunately, after about 200 miles of driving having just purchased the vehicle, it broke down, stranding my wife a block from our house. Good times. Here's the what's been going on with the Forester:

Panning for gold in the oil!

Engine removal:

Prior owner must not have completely removed the clutch fork pin and screwed up the bell housing:

Throwout bearing stuck to the pressure plate:

Three different types of spark plugs!

Removing the valve covers, a foreign object in the driver's side head?

Sweet, a sealant tip or something! I'm very thankful the thing didn't strand my wife farther than a block from the house...

Getting the cam gears off...

Cam time...

Wait, why won't the driver's side exhaust cam come out?

Oh, that's right, it's been oil starved. After using a screwdriver with a sock on it to pry the cam off the head:
Sweet, the cam journals are scored!

Cool, the cam is scored too! They match!

And the remaining short block:

I'll be pulling the oil pan to check rod bearings soon, but I don't have high hopes for them either.

Mine was worse :p... maybe....
I wouldn't wish a motor in worse shape upon anyone...

Not lookin' like the good deal you thought this was.......
Basically, the previous owner seems to have been truthful, but inept. He did the head gaskets, timing belt, and replaced the turbo with a rebuilt one, but I'm pretty sure the engine died because of the maintenance he performed. It would've been better off without him working on it.

sub'd for more destruction.
Here's some more destruction for you to read through: http://www.rs25.com/forums/f145/t75195-percocet-two-vicodin-couple-beers-panties-drop.html

Jeez you have a lot of Subarus. Too bad about the previous owner not treating it right.

I'm down to two running, two broken... When it's all said and done I'll have three running.

Nice find, sucks that its not in better shape.
Thanks! My wife spent a few hours cleaning the interior and it looks like new. There's very little wrong with the exterior either with the exception of a cracked tail light, it's just that this guy's maintenance was extremely sloppy.

i just wasted an hour and 10 minutes reading that utterly pointless waste of a thread. thanks for suggesting such nonsense.
It doesn't fail to deliver in the destruction department though :)

Got the heads dropped off today, the machinist said the exhaust cam wasn't the worst that he'd seen before. Hopefully he can get the cam and journal smooth again.

I picked up the heads today and the remainder of the gaskets and whatnot I'll be needing... All that's left is the ARP moly grease I need to move the studs over. Then hopefully this thing will run for a little longer than 200 miles before it needs me to look at it again!

The heads weren't as bad as I'd feared, all they and the cams needed was a good polishing. The machine shop also reset the valve lash on the heads, so I'm good to go!
