i am sure that i bent the main shaft backing plate after a clutch job. my question is. where can i find this part? or do i have to change the whole tranny??

thanks for the info guys

You have to take the tranny down to see what the marking is on the plate. There are a couple different thicknesses that are specific to that tranny.

Inside the trans

The mainshaft backing plate is located between one of the bearings and fifth gear. Yours should have a "2" stamped on it. When you take off the transfer case you should see it. Go to subaruparts.com and look in the OEM parts catalog. Select WRX, sedan, 2002 and MT. Click transmission and under this category select "MT,mainshaft". There's an exploded parts picture. It's there. Part number is "32294AA051" or "32294AA041" depending on the "mark".
