HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY

My Goals:

  • ID Vehicle: To simplify repairs/fixes/etc I'd love to know the cars history.
  • Main focus: handling, functionality, reliability.
  • End goal, yes the beaten horse "22b" exterior styling.
Technical Research (I'll post all my reading/research material links here):

How it came to be:

It was a Monday 11/18/19; as I drove past the junkyard I thought to myself I should stop by and see what's new, but it had just rained the weekend before so I drove past it. Wednesday rolls around, my buddy who loves to hit junkyards for random goodies comes into the shop, he says to me, "hey Joel, I know you like subarus. I took these badges off of one for you. There's two of them there."
As I turn my head and spy the badges, I ask "was it a coupe, are they complete?" He replies, "a 2dr I think so. I saw an engine and wheels, but it's missing a seat." I reply, "cool, I'll go check it out, right after I finish up some work." An hour passes, then another buddy and I head over to the JY.

We stroll the yard not knowing where it was but once we spot the car, I get excited. I see STI BBS', no trunk, rear diff etc as I approach from the back. I look under quickly drivetrains there, sweet. Walking alongside the car heading for the engine bay, I see misc interior bits missing, that's ok...I was more excited to find out what engine was in it. Seeing the TMIC meant something cool. By code I at least know it's an EJ20. The Turbo? Gone! Intake? Gone! P/S? Gone! Passenger side engine harness, Sliced! All in all, I felt I could save this. We walk with a brisk pace back up to the front with intentions to buy this thing. As we are up negotiating purchase of the car, another JY'r is mobbing out with the trunk and wing! He must have beat us to the punch by moments. LMBO my luck. Long story short, we buy it off of him in the parking lot. The staff and I encourage my buddy to go back to the car, to make sure no one else comes to take pcs off the car as we have purchased it. When he gets back he tells me a story about a guy undoing the strut bar; we conclude small potatoes, my interest was the car. What was funny to me, as the employees hear and see us buy the trunk back, they begin to tell us more about the car and the parts that sold the day before (tuesday), and the kicker.....they had set the car out MONDAY, haha, moral of that story, "trust your gut." If I wasn't being so prissy......

- With all that said, any help from the community in identifying this car would be greatly appreciated. If you have any pcs, parts, that may help please LMK. Hoping by the end of the week, the car will be cleared for me to bring home.

First GC part woot woot! Went to my newly-wed friends house and he handed me this rusty gem. What are the odds, GC missing driver seat, given driver seat rail for bucket. Sells datsun, now I have a 1 leftover Recaro Specialists in the garage, perfect.

cleaned the surface rust off; with all of that dirt a rust gone everything operates well. Slider now moves freely. The tough part is deciding what to do with the finish. Paint it? Powder coat it? or anodize it?

seat on the left ?

Glad to see someone else preserving / restoring one of these. Not that many made, fewer left.

Thanks JKP. I'm excited for it. Outside of making it a solid driver, I plan to take it slow. For now I just want to verify the condition of the swap. The JY has yet to get the paperwork.

Home sweet home lads. Slapped on a $25 L bumper so it would look decent sitting outside for the time being.

a member on the book of face, shared this with me also. He said it was roughly 3mo. ago.

I was making IG vids and just decided to compile them into one, so enjoy some of my boring Youtube.

Looking SHARP! The L bumper is terribly underrated imho, hoping you keep it. Either way, great job and thank you for saving it.

Thanks SOCO, Yes I do plan to keep the L bumper for now. If I end up going WRC arc fenders only then will I change it.

2 things that have slipped my mind during the purchase of this vehicle. One of them entirely and the other periodically. A: I would remember and moments later forget to check and see if the car still had an ecu (any insight would be helpful).

B: I couldn't do anything about it really w/out the paperwork. The car came with no keys. Conveniently I prepped for that, there was a 94 GM that was a few rows away that I removed all keys and locks from to swap over. However, late last night I got the bright idea to call the dealership and see if they could make me some keys. On a whim, I tried it and today it paid off.

Hope you guys enjoy the narration because I can't seem to post images without it. This week so far as been exhilarating and inspiring. For starters, I've ordered a replacement engine harness. When I purchased the car I just recalled lightly things that had been cut and expected the worst.

As I wait for the harness, I couldn't stop my mind from tinkering. I wanted to know more, I had to. I set out with some basic tools and a few moments before nightfall on sunday. Using some deduction (aka common sense) I soldered up some areas of the cut harness. The other red wires would take a bit more thinking. I could have just used a wiring diagram and deadened that quickly but I guess I wanted to challenge myself. :p

Finished all but the coil packs and TGV motor that night.

Looking at the amount of dirt on the motors I suspect either they were bypassed, damaged, or have sat open for quite sometime. I won't bother with that RN. I plan to delete them anyway.

Monday it would rain, so I took a break. This morning I thought to myself I should check the engine timing and timing belt. With a broken belt it would be a good reason for such a car to be left to the scrap-yard. That all checked out fine. Off to work I went.

Back home - With the passenger side harness disconnected and 4 wires left to solder, I'd connect the battery just to see if the car was getting power throughout. It was, a twist of the key would give a dead click and nothing. After realizing how naive I was, I went back outside into CA's chilling cold weather and soldered up those wires and connected the passenger harness.

I now go back into the car, I turn the key, expecting to hear the dead click and what do you know, the damn car tries to fire up (wooohooo, panic, instant key off at the point)...... I'll be installing a test dummy turbo that I have laying around; its from a fozzy, fresh fluids and some fresh gas hopefully over the weekend. Wish me luck!!!

Morning Guys, minute updates. Made some progress on the RS, then decided to order the following: MAF & knock sensors, along with an intake air filter.

Decided to install the VF39 from my spare STI swap instead.

drained the oil, no signs of metal. gave me a better look at this header. I'm inclined to think it's tomei/gruppe-S by the pairing

Adding some fuel to the tank, only to hear it leak out...I found the JYARD had drilled the tank.

pump removed, nice shavings :p

Decided to quick fix with quick steel

first layer underneath, did a second pass yesterday morning.

Random Facts:
found the car to have CXracing coilovers

and I'll also have to replace the radiator support properly.

Thanks Betty. Im stoked. Short version $800. Long version $1050.

It's crazy that someone would just junk a coupe! Definitely will be following the build!
I couldn't believe it either. The biggest reason I could find so far as to why, is maybe the owner lost keys or possible couldn't repair the wiring.

In to follow! Awesome progress so far too. What a find! Looks pretty rust free?
Thank you as well. I've been under it and inside it quite a bit, nothing past surface exposure at the window seam.

If you guys aren't following my IG (@elcucuy _sti) you missed nothing. Posted some work I was doing to the car. Engine seems to run TITS, slight misfire at idle, goes away w/ accel (I'll be going over my wiring once more. Joyfully we rev'd and idled the neighbors crazy for about a half hour trying to get the T stat to open. Discovering a squirting radiator, we shut down shop.

Idles great w/ MAF besides misfire
Chebay filter is mad JDM
NO cel lights so I haven't installed the KS.

Was on the verge of buying some fancy aluminum radiator when I remembered that I'd be receiving a JDM front clip in a few days to fix my bugeye. I stole the radiator from that clip and installed it on the GC last night. Cool findings, the coupe came with a fan in the trunk, score no more wishing to find another fan, my 1 fan issue quickly became 2. To make this task plug and play I disassembled all 4 shrouds, separating blades and motors. I then mounted the GC motors to the GD shrouds for that perfect fit onto the GD core.

Donor

horrible picture I didn't even capture the differences at all, but, hope you get the idea. Zap all items facing you starting with the blade 10mm, then it's a clear shot to the 3x 10's for the motor, note orientation because of the fan harness, swap it all over to the GD shroud and you're done.

Here's where we are now in the bay while I wait for the pump from the chop shop to arrive.

TDL Before we take a test drive:
-Front Subframe w/ new rack and pinion (Given the unknown state of the current rack and pinion setup, which is bothering me; I have plans to source and 04-07 front subframe and rack and pinion, then have a steering linkage fab'd up. The current one trips me out.)
-new tires or sell BBs and install some rims I have here.
-or maybe sell both sets BBS and rims I have here to go 5x114
