Intercoolers...

Im in the process of assembling a turbo kit for my car, and I need to find a quality intercooler for my car for something less than $700, which Ludespeed wants for one (Spearco 18x9). So my question is does anyone know of any companies who make a reputable TMIC for the RS (i.e. GReddy, HKS, something like this)? Im looking for something under $400 preferably. Thanks for any information.

RS25- Thanks for the info. That looks like a nice setup, but my question is will it bolt straight up to the RS, or do it and the old body style WRX's use the same front bumper design? I might just try and get me one of those, depending on how much they are of course- thanks man.

Suggestion...

Get the Lightweight Front Bumper Beam first...So that when you do go FMIC, you will have plenty of room to work with...

Zee:cool:
Looked promising, but them there's the price tag, and it isn't pretty. Cobb is asking $1400 for the setup and they aren't even sure that it will fit on our RS's, but im sure it could be done. I thought only 96 and prior TMIC's fit under the hoods of our RS's?

i heard that alpine guy had to do very very serious custom work to make the WRX intercooler work... like taking out his AC lines.... But i'm going to try anyways heheh...
Welll, he didn't do the work, Vermont Sports Car did. They had to do a bunch of stuff to cram that thing in there, but it looks damn good.

Depending on what your intentions are for the car, you could try an air - water IC from a Legacy.
Just a couple of negatives:

You would need to source a seperate reservoir, pump, and small radiator for the system. And of course, find a place to mount all of this stuff.

These systems tend to "heat soak" with prolonged boost runs, ie. a track event.
Yes there actually is a guy on i-club, blaster88 I think, who did that. I like the sound of it, but I don't like the look. Im only gonna be running @ 5psi, so I don't think I need an intercooler with an eficiency level damn near 100%. I don't know, that just sounds like a little bit too much custom work for me.

You might also try Vishnu performance. As I'm sure you know, Shiv is putting together kits for the 2.5L. He has spec'd a top- mount Spearco IC for these, and you might be able to talk yourself into one. The rumor mill says this IC will fit with most strut tower bars, and shouldn't crowd the fire wall too much (recommended mounting location for his Tec II setup).

FWIW, detonation on-set is effected by a number of different things. One of these is temperature of the charge, the largest component of which is intake air. A super efficient IC is just that much more insurance against putting ANOTHER 2.5L in the ground. Five pounds of boost is more than capable of ruining your day, and making your mechanic's.:(
Alright thanks for the info. I'll try to contact Shiv and see whats up with the intercoolers. Ludespeed sells the Spearco I/C's as well, but for a pricetag of $700.

Does anyone have any pictures or know if the Rallispec TMIC will fit underneath the hood of an RS with a Legacy turbo on? I ask because the turbo from the Legacy sits high in the engine compartment on the RS.

Graham
I suspect that it fits under the hood just fine, but the piping may be an issue.

If you are using a US Legacy setup, with the turbo headers, I think the location will work out, and the compressor outlet points straight up or very close to it.
Blaster88- Indeed it is a US Legacy turbo setup. I bought a RalliSpec Intercooler, so it will have to work, though I am sure with some modifications and a custom turbo to intercooler pipe.

Yes I am using the Legacy Turbo headers, so hopefully that will aid in making the setup work.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

I just recieved my Rallispec Intercooler in the mail and this thing is one VERY nice piece of of work. I had always hear people talk about how nice their products were, and it is so very true.

outlet points at a 45 degree angle towards the throttle body

I will be putting a new WRX IC on my Legacy motor as soon as I relocate the coolent res.
i just put my WRX IC in but i had to hacksaw the IC outlet... to make it a little shorter... :(

I'm going for a little smoother look w/the Dremal around the IC outlet and the throtle body inlet...just going to get a few millimeters extra room there. custom work is fun :borg:
yes i used a dremel but you can still see its hacked... and also... the edge is gone to keep it from sliding off the fittings...
HOK- No relocation of the AC Lines to make that puppty fit?

Graham
nope.... it fits ok... its sandwiched between the hood tho...i use padding... and it seems to be doing ok...

yeah, I want to keep the lip there...that's why ONLY a few mm off of each. I have a little more room w/the 2.2L throttle body, I think.
