A friend of the family needs to sell her '96 Legacy GT wagon. I'm debating whether to buy a new TS from Prestige and mod that or to buy her GT for around 7k and go nuts on it.

The GT needs a little cosmetic love, but it only has 44,580 miles on it! It's just begging for some kind of forced induction or an STi drivetrain swap. Of course it would need a manual tranny at the first possible opportunity. :D

What do you guys think? New school for the chassis but in a smaller car, and get the new car smell? Or go old skool Legacy Wagon and turn it into a B4 RSK killer?

 :p :happynow:

If you really want to drop the $ to mod out the Legacy wagon, I would go that route for sure. It would be a kick ass car. I think you should do a 2.2L (legacy turbo) with a newer 5spd. You can find those motors for around 2K-2.5K and a Legacy 5spd & rear diff would run you around 1k. Wouldn't that be fun! :)

Sounds like a seriously cool project. For a decent price you can have a killer sleeper car.....don't know about the new smell; sounds like the TS would need a serious amount of work done to it too. If the interior of the Legacy is in good shape, that's one of the things you would be buying new if you got the TS. If you can swing it, I say go with the Legacy and make us all a project car to be proud of. :)

I would say to go with the Legacy if only it were not an auto. There is nothing wrong with autos, but I know the way you drive and I know how unsatisfied you would be with an auto. I know you would want to do a tranny swap, but how long would you have to drive it before you could do that.

Get a TS wagon, take out the front sway bar, put a set of adjustable struts in, and rule H Stock for a while. Then when you are ready, I am certain that a Rotrex can fit nicely in that engine bay. HEHEHE

Well, just from a dollars and cents standpoint... I can get the Legacy and SWAP IN a WRX STi engine and tranny for less than it would cost me to buy a TS new... I can get a whole STi front clip with the wiring harness, ecu, diffs, etc... for 5 grand.

The difference is that it would be a cash transaction instead of being financed... but i'm exploring some options at the moment.

Here's the math:

$7200 1996 Legacy GT Wagon
$5000 1998 WRX STi engine and etc.
$1500 Swap labor (just a guess)
$2000 Ohlins 36mm Dual Adjustable suspension
$1000 Full exhaust (Brullen)
$500 Various other suspension componentry (sways, bushings)
----------------------
$17200 = Price of a new TS, EJ25 with drum brakes, crap suspension, etc.

Hmmm.... everything I'd need to do to the Legacy I would also have to do to the TS. Even supercharged, it would cost about the same to do it right. So, 17k for the car + 10k in mods. Seems a little excessive. On the flip side, I can finance quite a bit of that. With a 7k down payment on the TS, my monthly would be in the high 200s. Hmm.

And yes, I do want a wagon. If I could find a newer body style Legacy for this price point I'd probably jump on that.

Your due for a trip down to Tampa anyway. Then you can check out Mastro's used car lot. I'm sure that you can find an OBS or a Forester for a potential project. Hmmmm, FORESTER TURBO, with a STi suspension, for under 20K, now theres a project I want to see.

Some people never learn.
Dude, I only say that if he wanted to run in HS. I am pretty certain that he doesn't want to go into STS right away. If Porter wanted to go in STS or STX then by all means 25mm front 24mm rear.

Never learn....MY ASS!!!

Which by the way is all that you will see at the next race. :D :D :D

Porter,
Just think of how many female golfers and retired female tennis players you could hang out with! I'm sure that they would introduce you to some hotties from the WNBA.:checkit:

Women in comfortable shoes, kick ass!
