I lose about the amount of fluid from the top of the filler bottle to the bottom on the radiator overflow in about 15,000 miles I have refilled it 2 times and I have 47,000 on my RS.But once in a while after driving the car I can smell the anti freeze.I never see it on the ground on the motor or even stains anywhere.Anyone else have this problem or maybe a remedy? :boxer:

Have you checked for loose hose clamps on your heater core (under the dash)? My truck is doing that right now. Blech!

Mine stunk for a while and I couldn't find any leaks. then I started letting my car warm up in the morning and it made puddles. when driven, it was spraying on the heads, evaporating it, and it would only leak while idling if it was cold. Once it warmed up, it wouldn't do it when sitting. Wierd. Anyway, I had Subaru check it out and they found the leak and fixed it.

I think I found the leak and you were right about leaking on the head and evaporating it looks like the drivers side head gasket is leaking .It is going into the shop on Wednesday and they said I will have a loaner for up to two weeks:( if the gasket is blown I have 47k on the RS so it should still be under warranty .I will find that out once it gets into the shop.Or I wont be happy:boxer:

Well i stopped by the dealership and they said Yep needs a head gasket .I can not understand why they would not have something like that in stock:confused:
It is not that expensive and doesn't take up much room any way they said it would take a couple of days to get it and a couple of days to do it.At least I get to keep my car until the parts come in:)

Same kind of problem i'm having on my MY99. 57k km's and about to hit the major 60k km warranty limit. I seem to be losing 2litres of coolant within 8k km's. No coolant smell or leaks. Maybe I'll try your idle test and look for puddles. Otherwise I'm thinking it's the gasket - eek! Sorry for the metric numbres. :D

When I start the car and step on the throttle a bit, I can hear a water rushing sound from the engine bay. It sounds like water trickling through piping, but it disappears after the engine is warmed up.

Well Mcdade you were right again.
The head gasket and all the trimmings were covered under warranty.

Glad to hear that went well, money-wise, anyway. Took a loooong time, though. Some dealers have a different standard of service. When my car was due to be in the shop overnight, for a warranty repair, they had the part shipped by next day air so it would be ready the next day.
