how can you tell it's time to change the clutch

sometimes after some hard driving I can smell a burnt rubber kind of smell coming from the car.. I assume it's my clutch. I gotta learn to keep off the throttle before I downshift.. I know I should do heel toe downshifting... I'm a newbie and I'm learning..

anyways.. how can you tell when it's time to get a new clutch?
and typically how much is it to get a heavy duty one with installation included?

I think a good way to tell is to get in a high gear (5th) and go about 30. Floor it. If you're rpms go up and your mph stays the same or goes down, it's time for a clutch. :)
If it's not slipping, I wouldn't worry about it.

It would be really hard to tell by the points of engagment, just because every car is different. You can't really compare present to stock because the clutch is broken in.
