hey guys I was wondering if this is a common problem. my father has a 04 sti and its clutch went at 29,000 miles. he has been driving stick for over 30 years and every car that he has ever had has been manual... the dealer said that the clutch was worn out... my question is if he did something if this is a known problem...

Not common, but has happened. Not sure of your specific question, but you're talking about a high performance car that makes a lot of power to all 4 wheels. Something has to give somewhere sooner or later if you drive the car even a little bit hard. With a RWD/FWD car you get wheel spin. Although wheels spin in an STi, it takes a lot more force to do so and the clutch does take a pounding during hard launches.

If you're asking from a warranty perspective....you've got virtually no hope of getting it covered.

no he has had a 00 rs, 02 wrx before this one.. non ever had a clutch replacement. the dealer said it has to be the way he is driving and that he is driving the car wrong. no idea how someone that has had many manual cars and a few that are awd could have worn out a clutch at 29k. also the dealer said it didnt have a blue ring on it ( dont know what that actually means) ohh yea the flywheel needs to be changed also.

blue ring in the flywheel is where the metal has overheated and is really hard. it left alone this blue/hard spot will tear up the new clutch. need a new clutch/flywheel/ and PP maybe. this is kinda odd that it went out at 29K, thats sucks, and yeah no warranty coverage, this is a wear and tear item.

Just because he's driven stick for 30 years doesn't mean he's a good driver. Maybe he did a few too many launches with the new found power of the STI.

well if you have to bite the bullet and pay for the hole shibang might as well step-up to a peformance clutch disc and pressure plate, and lightweight flywheel. ACT, EXEDY, Centerforce, Zoom, Cusco? many choices.
