Help picking wheels and tires

I've been reading through all the threads on wheels and tires and just can't keep all the different numbers straight in my head anymore. I have a MY01 RS and I'm running the stock wheels and all season tires right now. What I want is some tires for summer that will be good for auto-x (did it with my all season's and didn't like the wear they had afterwards, so I want new tires before the next event). My plan was to get some new wheels and just use those in the summer. I would like 17's and was looking at 17x7's or 17x7.5's and it seems like 225mm wide tires are a popular choice. My main problem is that I do not want to have to roll the fenders at all and from what I've read anything wider than a 205mm tire will rub, and that may even rub. So now it looks like I may be best off staying with 16" wheels. Also the offset seems to make a difference, but I have no idea what the best offset would be. The wheels I would be getting would be Rota's because of the price and right now I have a stock suspension but will be getting KYB AGX struts with Prodrive P1 springs soon. So do you guys think 16" wheels would be best, or could I do 17's without rubbing and still run a decently wide tire? Thanks in advance your input will be a big help because I would like to get new tires before a big auto-x event in a couple weeks. Also the tires I was thinking about getting are the Ventus R-2's, but suggestions there would be welcome as well.

i'd stick with 16's if your auto crossing

Thanks Azarc8, that does seem like the sensible option. The only thing is that I do want 2 sets of wheels, and don't want to buy another set of stock wheels.

What would probably help me decide the best is if someone could tell me what is the biggest Rota wheel (17" or 17.5") and widest tire combination that you can fit on an 01 RS and have it not rub without rolling the fenders (if that's possible).

Hey man, I've got 17x7.5" ASA wheels on right now with the agx/prodrive strut and spring combo. The tires are 215/45/17's and they rub a little, but there are a few reasons I'm thinking they're rubbing. Also, only the passenger side rear rubbed, hence reason number 3.

1. I think my wheels are 37 offset, not optimal for non rubbage
2. front struts are most likely blown (heavily autocrossed, picked them up for 60 bucks for the pair)
3. I got hit a while back and the body shop didn't do the greatest job with my rear wheel well (friggen jagged crap in there)

Either way I think you should be just fine with 17's and 215 tires. Seth, the guy with the brp rs with the bronze wheels in town, is running 215/40/17 tires with zero rubbing at all. He had 215/45's and no rubbing there either.

I think I might pick up the paranoid fabrications ass sag eliminator spacers to help with the rubbing and the ass sag, as well as trim out the crap in my wheel well. I'll let you know. But keep in mind it might be a bit lol since my car isn't running.

I am rocking 17 x 8 inch rotas with no rubbing problems. I'm running Dunlop Direzza Sport z1 starspec's that are 215/45/17. Never rolled my fenders, and it has never rubbed with passengers, hard bumps, etc... I love it, so much traction... one of the best performance mods EVAR!!! (beside the sti motor)

To be safe I would suggest a 17x7 , 52-48mm offset with a 215-45-17 tire to avoid any issues . I have rolled rear fenders and run 17x7.5 48mm offset with a 225-45-17 tire .

This would be my advice too. I have 48 offset 17x7" wheels with 215/45-17 Falken Azenis RT-615's and P1 springs. They rubbed on the rubber trim strip in the rear fenderwell, which I then removed, and they have never rubbed since. No fender rolling needed.

Nice, so it sounds like 17x7 wheels with 215/45/17 tires would be my best bet if I want to move up a wheel size, thanks guys!
