I just took my "new" 2000 Subaru Legacy 2.2L sedan to my trusted local mechanic for a post-purchase inspection to get a baseline for stuff I need to watch out for down the road.

The car came back with a clean bill of heath except a few items:

- The AC isn't working (the clutch doesn't move); not a big deal since I live in Seattle, and we only see the sun for 3 or 4 days each year. I consider fixing this a good DIY project, so I'm actually glad the AC is inoperative.

- The shop also noted the following: "Head pipe heat shield is slightly loose - will eventually need new exhaust felts." I have no idea what this means, whether I can do the work myself, how much this will cost, and what to look for (or listen for) so I know when it's time to do the fix.

Can some explain "head pipe heat shield" and "exhaust felts" to me?
