Hi guys! New to the Subaru GC family but not new to the Subaru Family! Last year I bought my first STI built it up and last week I just bought my first 1998 Subaru Impreza L Coupe with 0 rust as it came from a local who had it shipped from California and garage kept it! Cant wait to build the dream chassis I’ve been dying for. :)

wow that is minty.

what's your plans for it?
I definitely want to swap and have been doing so much research on doing it but I think at the end of the day I'm going to try and get a donor car for it instead of finding bits and pieces. It's just less of a hassle. My tuner told me to just use my '16 STI as the donor but I kinda want to just keep that car because it has all the bells and whistles this 90's car cannot compete with for a daily lol

I'd be cautious doing any swap newer than 07 for the sake of it being not CANBUS, and much less headaches. But with enough time and money anything is possible, one person on here did a dash swap but the vents don't function. Others are working on CANBUS emulators but i believe they are still a work in progress at this time.

Good to know! Haven't heard about all that before.

So that actually brings up a good point. I have a friend who knows a guy selling his 2007 STI and it has everything, engine, ecu, harness, etc. it’s basically a donor car for a project and I was originally hesistant because I didn’t know how it would be for an ‘07 swap BUT because you said what you said I might take it up with the guy! He’s selling it for $7k and the issue is that it’s shift fork is broken.

Yeah an 07 will swap over and doesn't have canbus. Just make sure you got keys because 05+(maybe 04 too) sti's have immobilizer and won't start without the key near by; most people will tape a key to the immobilizer or carry both keys. You'll need the gas pedal as well since it's DBW and not a cable throttle.

Yup! The guy I’m purchasing from has the keys as well! But wish me luck cuz this will be my first engine swap on my own without a transmission harness only an engine harness 🥴

Trans harness shouldn't be too hard to source but you may also need the dccd controller, not sure what config it will be stuck at without one. Good luck and post pics!

Great looking car! Reminds me a bit of the 97 L sedan I bought as my daughter's first car a few years ago. Even without a swap it has been a great car for her to DD.
