First off, no my green plugs are not connected. I have a 99 forester with almost 180k on the od. I have a UEL header and muffler for after mark things I've done to it. I replaced my timing belt, water pump and head gaskets a few months ago, because I found oil in the coolant reservoir and I couldn't drive it a mile without it over heating. The car has been hesitating really bad and nearly dying going uphill. My car smokes excessively as well. I figure I need to replace the valve seals because I found oil on my spark plugs. My cel did come on and was not flashing at one point and i had it checked and got p0420 and p0443. This is just the background...

My problem now is that on a trip to the mtn my cel came on and started to flash. My car then started to sputter and hesitate even more than before. Then I hear a noise that sounded like air. sh-sh-sh-sh. I figure exhaust leak because I look under my car and I see smoke coming from cat-header marriage. I replace the gasket there and the gaskets from my header to the block. I cleaned the surfaces before doing so as well.

The noise is still there and I can't really pinpoint where exactly it is coming from. It doesn't sound like it is coming from the cat but more by the passenger side of the motor towards the front of the engine. I took the plugs out and looked for anything noticeably wrong but nothing jumped out at me...

Any suggestions or info will help. Cheers.

You torque the intake Mani on properly? But a leak before the o2 (or a bad o2) causes everything you are describing, I've been dealing with almost the same situation, but I figured out its for sure exhaust related, try redoing the gaskets and use ultra copper rtv in conjunction with the gaskets

Your going to have to take it in or get under it yourself while its running and figure out of your exhaust is cracked..

You say UEL headers.. mine cracked in about 8 different places

When my 99 OBS had a flashing CEL and hesitation is was a cylinder misfire, I replaced the wires and plugs, no fix.

Then I replaced the coil pack and the problem was fix. I had no smoke or burning oil though.

Hope you fix the problem soon.

Replaced the ignition coil and plugs which will hopefully help the hesitation but there was oil residue on 2 of the 4 plugs. Checked for cracks on my header and didn't see anything again. I did find an exhaust leak at the rear of my exhaust pipe a couple feet from my muffler however. I will probably end up pulling my header off and trying to examine more meticulously... :[

The codes were catalyst efficiency below normal (P0420)
Evap Purge Control Solenoid Circuit low voltage (P0443)

Ive replaced plugs, wires and ignition coil to hopefully fix the flashing CEL but none have fixed it. Tomorrow i will be replacing the o2 sensor to hopefully fix the p0420 code and maybe the flashing cel but i have a feeling my cat has taken a dump.

Well, after a compression test I found out there is zero compression coming from cylinder 3. The other three cylinders were around 175psi.
