Hello,

I'm getting a whining noise from the engine of my 2003 Subaru Impreza whenever the engine is on but I am not giving it gas (e.g. idling, coasting, etc). When the gas pedal is depressed, the whine goes away. It does not appear to be related to speed or rpm. I've noticed it within the last two days, and it seems to be getting louder.

I recently (within the last 500 km) had a major service which included replacing both head gaskets, alternator belt and clutch slave cylinder and hose, and am wondering if the whine might be related to any of the repairs. The car is low-mileage (about 110 000 km).

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Try to get a video of it. Where in the engine bay is it coming from? Maybe a water pump?

Sounds like a pulley could be going out if it happened after a belt change. Or the alternator belt was tightened too much.

Thanks everyone - I took it back to the dealer, they tightened the alternator belt (which also drives the steering) and the whining noise was gone!
