I'm planning on taking the Brat on a trip in the next two weeks and my distributor has too much play. So, I just replaced my distributor with a rebuilt one. I added a new cap and rotor, made sure that everything lined up and it won't fire. The engine will crank a few times, but it seems like there's no spark. I've put the old disty back in, checked everything, but still the same problem.

Any ideas?

Check for spark - take a plug out of the block and hold it near to the block to see if it sparks (use a thick rubber glove or some other non-conducting item to hold it!). If it does not spark, you've got a wire disconnected somewhere, or maybe a bad coil. If it does, then check for gasoline.

Of course, be sure you've got the wires in the right order. If it sounds like it's backfiring, you've got a wire (or two) in the wrong order.

I'm pretty sure I've got the wires correct. I may be getting spark, but I'm 100% sure I'm getting fuel--I can smell it when I flood it.

I think I may have the distributor aligned wrong or the rotor in the wrong place.

Could these cause a problem?
