Tools Need:

10mm Socket Wrench
10mm Ratchet/Cresent Wrench
Oil Drip Pan

Part Numbers:

10 x 13271AA071 Rocker Cover Washers
04 x 10966AA000 GSKT-SPARK PL PIP
02 x 13294AA053 GSKT-ROCKER COVER




Wait untill the engine is cool before starting to avoid burning yourself. Place the drip pan underneath the car - there should only be a marginable amount of oil dripping as the majority of the oil should have settled in the car's oil pan.


Passenger Side:

First, place
remove your air intake tract to make room to work with.



Next disconnect the airbox hose and spark plug wires and tuck them away so they will not dangle over the valve cover. Be sure to remove the spark plug wires by pulling on the boot, not the cord itself.

There are a total of 6x10mm bolts that hold the cover on, five facing the side of the car, and one facing the front on the timing belt cover. They should all break loose easily and have to be loosened by hand. The one tricky bolt is on the lower left, the crossmember may not allow your socket wrench to get onto the bolt and thats where the 10mm Ratchet/Cresent wrench comes in handy. Remove all the bolts completely to avoid having them snag or scratch any of your engine components when you remove the valve cover.

Once the bolts have been removed, give the valve cover a tug and it should come off easily. Carefully manuver it out of the engine bay.



The valve cover gasket may be stuck to the head like in my case, or it will be on the valve cover. If it is stuck to the head, carefully pull it off.

To remove the spark plug gaskets, just yank them off.

Install the new spark plug gaskets by slipping them on, narrow side first, onto the tubes. Make sure you seat them completely, you will know when they are fully seated when the metal ring inside of them is sitting snug against the tube.



Now turn your attention to the valve cover. If you look in the bolt holes, you will notice rubber washers inside the holes:



These are the rocker cover washers, remove and replace these.

Flip the cover over and remove the old valve cover gasket if it is still inside.:



Now clean all the oil that may be inside the channel the gasket rested in before inserting the new valve cover gasket. Properly align the new gasket, and press it in using your hands. It should fit in snugly.

Now carefully maneuver the valve cover back into place and gently thread the bolts by hand. Retighthen the bolts with the 10mm socket starting with the center bolt, then the outer bolts. Be careful these only require 3.7 ft/lbs of torque!!!



Reconnect the airbox hose, reinsert the spark plug wires, and reinstall your airbox/intake.

Ok drivers side.

First off, you need to remove your battery - careful with this sucker, its heavy, and unbolt you windshield wiper fluid(2x10mm bolts)



Lift the washer fluid up and disconnect the harness by pressing in the green tab:



Then simply secure it out of the way by any means, I simply set it on the strut tower:



Now you disconnect the oil blow-by tube and spark plug wires. Then proceed to unbolt the cover:



Even though I removed the cover without removing the oil filler neck, I would recommend it. Do so by removing the 2 10mm bolts on it, and disconnecting this wire loom attached to it:



You should now have the spark plug gaskets exposed:





Remove and replace.

Remove and replace the valve cover gasket using the same method described for the passenger side. If the old gasket isnt in the cover it will be stuck to the heads still as in the above pics.

Reinstall in the reverse order. Remember, the valve cover bolts only require 3.7f/lbs of torque!

I would do them if you got oil on your spark plugs(thats why I did mine). It honestly only takes 15 minutes.
Bingo, exact samething that happened to me. Only had oil on the boots though.

Excellent write-up! The pics are awesome and especially the ones of the swollen seals. I'd just like to add my 2cents on this subject as well.

Whenever you notice oil on your spark plug boots, 99.9% of the time it's due to the spark plug seals leaking. As you can see in the picture, oil makes the rubber boots swell up. Oil will also do this to your spark plug wires. Spark plug wires that are saturated with oil could cause a misfire because the spark will find an easier path to ground through the boot than through the spark plug itself. I've seen this happen already in the shop. You could actually see where the spark arc-ed(sp?) up the side of the spark plug inside the boot.

Anytime the wires are saturated with oil, replace them. And it wouldn't hurt to replace the plugs as well just as a precautionary measure. Be smart and keep up with preventative maintenance. It may cost a little more now, but it will save you headaches in the future.

about a buck and a quarter a pop. I'm cheap/poor can they be reused.
They're not just washers, they are gaskets as well. It would be dumb not to replace them when you have the covers off.

Yup damn gaskets cost a lot lol thats why I've only done one side so far... local stealership ran me up about 50 bucks just for one side! I'm glad I did all the work myself and didnt get charged labor! lol
