if the hub doesnt spin freely, or hums while you spin it, it needs replacing....as a tech, its not hard to do. but you definitely need a hydraulic press. just remove the brakes, unbolt the knuckle, (front or rear), press out the hub (from the back side), remove the snap ring, press out the wheel bearing, sometimes the outer race gets stuck on the hub, you might have to use an air hammer to break it off. make sure you have new seals. press in the new wheel bearing (slowly), install the snap ring, then press in the hub again (slowly, while turning the knuckle to make sure it doesnt bind up) and thats pretty much it.

or you can just give it to me and ill do it for you, haha

Sounds easy if you have the press, but I don't so I may need to send off the hubs for action. What would rebuilding the hubs with new bearings cost?

There is also a tool called a 'blind bearing puller'. There are a few other bearing pullers that will do the trick. You can do this entire thing yourself in your driveway, but you'll need this tool (about 100 bones). A hydraulic press would be way easier, but it's possible for a DIY'er as well.

1) crack the axle nut (while car is on ground...could be seized)
2) jack up & pull off wheel
3) disconnect tie rod/ball joint/caliper and strut
4) pull the knuckle up and out from the ball joint and axle
5) press out hub
6) press bearing out of knuckle
7) press bearing into knuckle
8) press hub into bearing
9) reassemble

It's a fairly quick job to remove the whole unit. If you don't have a press, the going rate is 40-60 bucks to take it to a shop and have them press off the old stuff and press on the new stuff. Don't forget new seals (inner and outter) from the dealer!

all prices in canadian dollars, which lately, is about the same as american :)

EDIT: here are a few ebay links that will expire soon. Using these tools by themselves OR in conjunction with other tools will get the job done.

You can take the knuckle/hub assembly with the bad bearing to a shop and have them press it out for you for about $40.

Bump, forgot that I had started this to see how hard it was to repack the bearings. Can you just separate the hub from the knuckle to repack them?
