I pulled the engine and did a bunch of maintenance work about 7500 miles ago. This included replacing the head gaskets. The bolt holding the hydraulic tensioner (also replaced back then) broke and well.... the intake valves got to know the pistons up close and personal. So the heads are off now and will get new valves and whatever else is necessary.

So my question is this: Are head gaskets reusable?

Nope, especially if they are factory headgaskets (non-MLS). I haven't ever taken heads off and not torn the headgaskets. Even if I didn't tear them, the material has already been compressed, I wouldn't chance it. If you did reuse them and they decided not to seal you'd at minimum be doing everything all over again. Worse case can cost you the whole engine.
