Broke EJ22T Diagnosis Pt. 1

Well, I finally got around to ripping the engine out of the car. Took about 3 hours to pull it and get the heads off and when I did I saw something weird. the #4 cylinder bore was scratched all around the bore from top to bottom (In the same direction as the stroke in other words). The Hone marks were rubbed off but these new marks looked just hone marks but in the wrong direction. Without a pic yet that is as close as I can tell you.

It could be a broken ring but I don't think so because there is no gouges in the block like a broken rings usually makes and no piston slap noise. Just micro lines (like hone marks) going from the top of the cylinder down throughout the whole bore.

So, my pre-diagnosis because I can't get the piston out yet is a little weird but probably the case. I believe that the compression ring in #4 cylinder was not gapped right or the wrong ring wsa used. This lead to the ring expanding (like all rings do) until the ends touched (Like what's not supposed to happen.) When that happens, the ring can no longer grow any more and it scuffs up the bore because it has no more room to grow. this wears down the ring and bore (Pretty quickly) and viola! No more compression and tons of blowby.

When I take the piston out I will know for sure but if it turns out to be a ring that was improperly gapped I'm going to be Extremly pissed and I will do everything in my power to get my money back from subaru on the block. Only time will tell.

Eric

PS: No sign's of detonation on the pistons or plugs at all.

my god... hopefully you can get a full refund or exchange from subaru... looks like you done nothing wrong...

pics soon?
This is the same from last time, right? I mean hell... I'd hate for you to take the lead on me on blowing up motors (I'm up to the 3rd rebuild and 3rd shortblock in the car, including the original).
