So I did my first Auto X today here in Colorado. No go fast bits (I sold them all) and just SP 5000's for rubber. And can we say I sucked?

Those tires are great on the street, but slop on the track. Best time was 59 seconds for some guy in a 1.8T Jetta, with some nice Kuhmo racing tires (GS class) and my best was a 63.818. :curse:

I'm buying some better tires! :D

James you weren't that bad damn! Shoulda stuck around though, it was pretty dramatic at the end when Larry Ganz ran a 59.5 or whatever in street mod class for first, then the next run was a highly modded WRX that beat Larry by like 2 tenths of a second to get first.

I am so sunburnt! Ow! I could have done much better. I am already pricing a set of spare rims and new tires.... heheeeheee :)

And I have been going over the wiring diagram for the transmission so I can build my own shifter. :D

Yes, another wiring guru might be good. Or we might screw everything up!

STS has a slightly lower PAX (due to the tire rules) and the RS is much more competitive there (even stock).

As long as you had fun, though, right?

I actually did beat a lot of other WRX's. Those were just the guys who had racing compound tires. Equal the tires and I think it would have been MUCH closer. :checkit:

Such as these folks (and some RS's) :

6. 66/GS GREG HORTON, N > 65.051 <
01 SUBARU WRX WAGON
1) 66.122 2) 66.121 + 1 3) 66.291 4) 65.051

8. 28/GS MARK SLEEPER, N > 65.534 <
02 SUBARU WRX
1) 66.658 2) 65.534 3) 65.021 + 1 4) 65.661

10. 43/GS DANIEL ESPINOZA > 67.357 <
02 SUBARU WRX
1) DNF 2) 71.187 3) 68.573 4) 67.357

12. 32/GS JONATHAN FIELDS > 70.934 <
02 SUBARU WRX
1) 73.982 2) 72.023 + 2 3) 70.934 4) 71.263

12. 62/STS JJ CASSA ARVADA CO > 64.234 <
00 SUBARU IMPRESA RS
1) 63.359 + 1 2) DNF 3) 64.234 4) 62.575 + 1

18. 63/STS JARID HANSON, N > 67.176 <
97 SUBARU IMPREZA
1) 67.925 + 1 2) 68.106 3) 67.176 4) 65.460 + 1

21. 39/STS ERIK SCHMIDT, N WESTMINSTER CO > 67.677 <
97 SUBARU IMPREZA
1) 72.722 2) 67.806 3) 67.677 4) 68.542 + 1

23. 555/STS BRIAN STOLIKER, N COLORADO SPRING CO > 69.171 <
02 SUBARU IMPREZA
1) 69.840 2) 76.300 3) 70.625 4) 69.171

Now of course there were people who beat me, but who cares about that. ;)

Hey, are you guys not using the 2002 classification rules. In the new rules the WRX is not in G Stock anymore. I don't remember offhand what class it is in, but I know it is not supposed to be in G Stock anymore.

Good results for your first time. I can tell you from experience that once you get used to race tires you can expect about a 1.5-2 second drop on your average course. The rest you'll have to make up with some more practice. ;)

For your first race tire, I would suggest giving the Yokohama A032R a chance. They are not quite as grippy as the Kumho V700, but have much more actual tread and are quite streetable. They are rather loud (huuuummmmmmm) but work well and are not as touchy as the Kumho or Hoosier.

Next year the WRX will be in DS. GS will be left to the RS, where it should do quite well.

Actually, it's not my first time racing, although it's my first time racing this year and on the SP 5000's. That is why I am not happy with my results! :p However, seeing as how the only folks who beat me were the only folks with racing compound tires I am not *too* surprised.

Anyway, I was thinking of the A032Rs or the Kuhmo VictoRacers, as I am planning on getting a second set of rims (go see the Marketplace - WTB) for race tires exclusively. I'm not going to drive them on the street. That is what those SP 5000s seem to be very good at!

What about that black '98 that won STS (59.4) and whose times split 1st (Chad 58.9) and 2nd (Larry 59.5) in SM? N/A GC8 Imprezas on street rubber can still scare a few of them!

The RMsolo series is running a winter series which started last year therefore using last year's rules. The new 2002 rules go into effect at the 1st event of the Spring/Summer series. And last Sunday until it was pointed out, a few WRX were put into STS...

I must confess. I'm the driver of that car:D

Hey James... what's going on with your AutoX performances, man? ;)

how many people show up for runs there in CO? We jsut had our first of the season here, with 292 entries. I managed an 11th place in the overal PAX rating, taking the first STS win, and being faster than every single WRX out there. Still have only done suspension work. I love my snorkus! :D

I'm doing okay, for not knowing I could run racing rubber! I have no idea how many people showed up, but it was a LOT! At least a hundred people, I am guessing.

And yes, Mark, there were several RS' that were stunning. Sadly I could not stick around to see them. But aren't Larry's and Chad's cars tubocharged?

I think I did okay for what I had - a bone stock RS with so-so street tires, but just you wait until I get my act together!

Larry's car is turboed. Chad's is not. However, Chad didn't run his car as he had a problem on the 1st run. He ended up running a borrowed modded WRX in SM on which he put his Jap-spec rain tires (basically R compounds) off his busted RS.

Technically, auto trannied RS are not legal for GS because of the ECU controlled center diff, it has to be mechanical. Regionally though, nobody really cares.

By the way, welcome to Colorado.

Mark
