Just curious if anyone knows of any relatively cheap mods that can be done to the 1.8 to get any sort of power from it. I already have a set of Subysports pulleys, K&N air filter, and NGK plugs. I want to go turbo eventually, but I am in college for another 5 years. That said, it is quite a ways off. Any ideas? Thanks. :D

I have an RS exhaust already, and I would rather have something more reliable than nitrous for right now. :D

i've got my mods listed below...it's no 1/4 mi monster (down to 16.2 standing), but it's quicker in practical situations than the numbers suggest. on the way home from work last night, some kid in a loud-arse GS-R took off from a light, so i decided to play a bit, and stepped on it at about 3000 in 1st...caught up, pulled about 1/2 a hood's length ahead, and it stayed that way up until about 65-70, when that monster top end began to take over, and my common sense returned. ;) not bad for having a 60hp deficit stock for stock.

a *real* intake wil help you quite a bit. i too once thought that the removal of the silencer with an amsoil panel netted about the same gain, until i installed the JCS...there IS a difference. good luck getting one now, though. :(

Thanks. I was thinking of getting the Injen intake, as it looks like it will fit judging from the pics that were posted somewhere on here recently. I don't have a whole bunch of money to spend, so I really want the biggest reliable bang for my buck!

i didn't know injen made an intake for MAF cars...

my proECM was $250 from larry ganz, and i got the exhaust on closeout (once GC8's were off the showroom floor) for $450 at mastro subaru in tampa...i went to have some minor service done, and saw the prodrive ---> somehow poor judgement got the best of me, and i left with it on the car.

kinda pricey considering it's only an axle back, but it will last longer than the car judging by the construction, and it sounds beautiful. plus the piping is big enough to support a turbo...which makes sense since it WAS designed for a GC8 WRX afterall...

i don't know WHERE you'd find one now though...if i had to do it all over again, i'd probably get a brullen cat-back for about the same price, which would offer better gains.

but i made my decision and stick by it. it sounds nice, and no one else has one.

if it's for a 98-99, you should be fine. i don't know what year your car is, but if it's '96 (i think) or earlier, you'll have 4 vaccuum hoses that need to hook on to the intake tube in some way. the only difference is, the 98's & 99's only have 3 vaccuum fittings on the intake. so you'll have to get a T-fitting to hook 2 of the hoses together on the same vaccuum nipple on the intake.

i realized this a little too late, and had one unconnected vaccuum hose left over once the intake was installed. fortunately, the T-fitting i needed was included with the intake. that'll teach me not to follow directions... i'm not 100% sure where you'd get such a part since i didn't have to frantically search for one, although i'm sure there's someone who knows.

The only problem with that is that I have a MAF sensor instead of a MAP sensor, so I don't think the Injen would work. We have the same motor I think, the 1.8, so mine is probably the exact same setup as yours. I could try the one at procarparts.com-it looks like it would fit, but I don't know what kind of benefits, if any, I would see from it. The search continues......

i would just wait a while...supposedly COBB is finally going to start selling MAF intakes in june or july. or just watch the i-club classifieds, and see if a 93-99 jc sports intake comes up for sale...

the weapon R works OK, provided you get a better MAF adapter (from kartboy or larry ganz) and filter, but $200 for the intake + $40 for the filter + $40 for the MAF adapter...there's your $280 for a cobb right there...

Good point about the Weapon R and the Cobb, although I was mostly kidding about the Weapon R. If I found one used at the right price I would consider it, but I'm not paying $200 for a new one. The only problem with the Cobb intakes is that I don't have the "torque box" as I think it is called-the airbox right on the throttle body, and most intakes that I've seen are made to come off of that. I might be able to find one of those and then get an RS intake! There's an idea.....

They do make an injen intake for MAF based cars. Don't cross your fingers about the Cobb for MAFs. It'll be a while if ever...

$900 AUD=$463 USD! That's a great price for what you get! Only problem is that shipping would cost an arm a leg! :curse: It's definitely something to consider!
