They had a part where they showed a low-speed test of several popular new cars, including the new 2.5RS, Lancer, and a Volvo sedan (S40, I think). The tests where all at 5 MPH: one straight into a wall, one diagonally into a wal, and one backwards into a post. NONE of the cars did any better than marginal, and that includes the Scoobie! This was based on cost of repairs to the car afterwards, none of them would have injured anyone. Except for maybey the Kia mini-SUV, it's airbags went of on the straight into the wall 5 MPH test. They don't have anything up on the web site yet, but hopefully they'll update it, I'll keep my eye on it, and put a link here if they put it on.

i think its the bug eye design... i saw a neon slide into the back of a camry going 10 kms an hour and both airbags went off the front frame was dented in by a foot rad broken in half and the hood took the shape of an inverted V.... the camry had a streak of pain on the bumper with a little plastic scrapped off....

i felt so bad for the neon guy... but i still had to laugh... (on the inside)

Did you all see this a few years back when they did SUV's? They used a Hummer in one of them, and at 5 MPH the Hummer backed into the pole, bent it, rode right over it and hit the building behind it taking out 5 bricks.

Now thats just funny.

interesting

just saw a subie ad on tv stating how safe their cars are in crashes.. they showed the GDA RS instead of the WRX.. calling it just an "impreza". I think Subaru forgot the WRX is an impreza too!

Anyway, weird to see this thread right after I saw that ad. Someone at Subaru must have caught that show! :D

The cars are safe in crashes, but in a low speed bump, it might cost you some money to fix it. Sometimes, I wish they would just go back to steel bumpers on cars, you could hit anything with those and not damage your car.

If not steel bumpers, then they should have unpainted bumpers.
I used to own a toyota a long time ago. it had black bumpers
and think it was made of rubber. i could scrape things with it and not even notice any damage
