It's a jack plate. Also protects your steering rack in a sense.
Though you don't really need it if you never jack your car up. Some mess up and think their oil pan is a jack plate. Up to you what you want to do with it
Actually, I'd be surprised if it didn't weigh more than 5lbs. That sucker is heavy! But, I left mine in. I jack my car up all the time to swap on my R-Comps at AutoX events.
I wouldn't advise removing it. 5lbs is minimal when it comes to weight reduction plus like skidd said, people use it quite often to lift the front end up.
definitely 5+ lbs off if you removed it, i had to mess around with it while i was doing the front sway bar and there is a block of solid metal under the initial plate ... i put it back on tho (after cleaning all of the rocks out of it)
Mine is 5lb 8oz... Also, am I supposed to put the screws/bolts/nuts back on after this mod.
Also the weight under the plate itself weighs just over 5lb, you could just take this out and put the jacking plate back on (it would deform if used to jack but would protect the rack.
